The Island of Malta region
The climate of Malta is basically a Mediterranean one, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. During the summer months (May to September) there is little rain, there are between 10 and 12 hours of sunshine daily and the temperatures average is 23.5C.
Malta has something to offer for everyone. From harbour cruises, to ferry boats one of which can take you to the sister Island of Gozo in 20 minutes. It has a rich history which takes us back more then 4,000 years. The places and museums to visit are endless. Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is a UNESCO world heritage site. Hagar Qim, Ghar Dalam, Mnajdra Temples, Tarxien Temples, The national war museum, the museum of fine arts are a few of the places not to be missed. For the young and full of energy Malta has the St Julians’ night life with its discos and parties with live entertainment throughout the year, bowling alleys and cinemas.
For those who like to explore the underwater world Malta is renowned with divers for its spectacular underwater surroundings. Throughout the year towns and villages all over Malta celebrate a ‘FESTA’ in honour of their local patron saint; these events are really a great spectacle for all who visit Malta. The fireworks festival in Malta has become a fixture in the Maltese calendar. This event is held at the grand harbour in Valletta. Malta has also fine shopping for clothes and jewellery.
Valletta and Sliema are full of brand name shops where one can find anything that his heart desires. Open air markets in Malta are very popular. There is an open market practically on every day of the week. It is impossible to mention everything of what this gem of an Island has to offer; the Maltese people are renowned for their hospitality and friendship and are only too pleased to help if you require any assistance.
Mdina / Rabat, Malta area
Today Rabat is a bustling town with its own attractions. Historically, Rabat is inextricably linked to the Roman period with the Domvs Romana being an excellent example of the Roman lifestyle. It is the only and most important suburb of Mdina. It is separated only because it is not within the old city walls. Nonetheless, it can boast some relics of the first order.
There are two sets of catacombs open to public, St. Paul's and St. Agatha's. The parish church of St. Paul was originally the nucleus of Malta's first Christian community. The baroque church and priory of ST. Dominic are important, as are the remains of the Roman Villa; and also the first hospital in Malta, the Santo Spirito, with records going back to 1370 (150 years before the arrival of the knights). On the road out of Rabat there is a pleasant country drive which takes you to the Verdala Castle, summer residence of the Grand Master.
Further on to that road one can find the Busketto Gardens, Malta's biggest park, with acres of lovely greenery. Do not miss to visit Dingli Cliffs very close the Busketto Garden, These spectacular cliffs which at 120 ft. high provide a unique and dramatic vista. The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene perched on the edge marks the highest point on the Maltese Islands, some 250 metres above sea level.
How to get there
RyanAir fly to Malta on low cost daily flights from the UK and Ireland. Malta's national airline, Air Malta (www.airmalta.com) have numerous scheduled flights daily from Heathrow and Gatwick besides several other frequent flights from several UK airports, like Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.
Airmalta has scheduled flights from practically every country in the EU.
The Maltese Islands are not very large, which makes getting around relatively trouble-free.
The public bus service on Malta and Gozo is a good way to get around as buses serve the major tourist areas, go practically everywhere and are cheap and efficient. The cost of a bus route ranges from €0.35 to €0.58 and the longest bus journey takes about fifty minutes; the average ride is between twenty and thirty minutes
Renting a car is a good option if you want to get to the farther reaches of the island. All the road signs are in English and driving is on the left.
Major and local car hires are located on Malta and Gozo with daily rates of €16 - €28. International and national driving licenses are acceptable. A number of internationally based car hiring firms as well as local garages also offer the services of chauffeur-driven cars.
