The Island of Malta region

The climate of Malta is basically a Mediterranean one, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. During the summer months (May to September) there is little rain, there are between 10 and 12 hours of sunshine daily and the temperatures average is 23.5C.
Malta has something to offer for everyone. From harbour cruises, to ferry boats one of which can take you to the sister Island of Gozo in 20 minutes. It has a rich history which takes us back more then 4,000 years. The places and museums to visit are endless. Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is a UNESCO world heritage site. Hagar Qim, Ghar Dalam, Mnajdra Temples, Tarxien Temples, The national war museum, the museum of fine arts are a few of the places not to be missed. For the young and full of energy Malta has the St Julians’ night life with its discos and parties with live entertainment throughout the year, bowling alleys and cinemas.
For those who like to explore the underwater world Malta is renowned with divers for its spectacular underwater surroundings. Throughout the year towns and villages all over Malta celebrate a ‘FESTA’ in honour of their local patron saint; these events are really a great spectacle for all who visit Malta. The fireworks festival in Malta has become a fixture in the Maltese calendar. This event is held at the grand harbour in Valletta. Malta has also fine shopping for clothes and jewellery.
Valletta and Sliema are full of brand name shops where one can find anything that his heart desires. Open air markets in Malta are very popular. There is an open market practically on every day of the week. It is impossible to mention everything of what this gem of an Island has to offer; the Maltese people are renowned for their hospitality and friendship and are only too pleased to help if you require any assistance.
The Mdina / Rabat, Malta area
Today Rabat is a bustling town with its own attractions. Historically, Rabat is inextricably linked to the Roman period with the Domvs Romana being an excellent example of the Roman lifestyle. It is the only and most important suburb of Mdina. It is separated only because it is not within the old city walls. Nonetheless, it can boast some relics of the first order.
There are two sets of catacombs open to public, St. Paul's and St. Agatha's. The parish church of St. Paul was originally the nucleus of Malta's first Christian community. The baroque church and priory of ST. Dominic are important, as are the remains of the Roman Villa; and also the first hospital in Malta, the Santo Spirito, with records going back to 1370 (150 years before the arrival of the knights). On the road out of Rabat there is a pleasant country drive which takes you to the Verdala Castle, summer residence of the Grand Master.
Further on to that road one can find the Busketto Gardens, Malta's biggest park, with acres of lovely greenery. Do not miss to visit Dingli Cliffs very close the Busketto Garden, These spectacular cliffs which at 120 ft. high provide a unique and dramatic vista. The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene perched on the edge marks the highest point on the Maltese Islands, some 250 metres above sea level.

My husband and self and an older relative stayed here for 10 days. The accommodation was in a very good location for the Mdina and bus services. The place was big enough and well equipped but apart from the front liiving/kitchen area was very dark and required lighting all day. The front room over looked the open countryside but the house was on the main road which did not enable us to sit with windows open during the busy times. We also were disappointed that although we were initially told that as we were staying for more than a week we could have special rate for the extra days in the end we were charged for the extra days on a nightly basis making it much more expensive. We were also prepared to pay separately for the utilities but were shocked when the bill came to over E100. We had only used the shower daily and washing machine every few days. We never bathed as the tank was taking so long to heat up and the bath was very large so wanted to keep the cost down. We did not require heating. We washed up after snacks or meals but were out all day and ate out most of the time. There is one main en-suite bedroom and the other bed was made up on the "mezzanine" floor with the tv which we never used as our relative used that area. It was a comfortable place to stay and the owner very helpful. We spent hours exploring the area and found the buses plentiful. All in all we had a wonderful time. |

We are a couple with a 2 years old baby. Luz da Sol is perfect apartement to visit Malta, because is very close Medina (2 minute walking to main door) and in the centre of Malta Island (we suggest to rent a car to vistit all Malta and Gozo). It's a modern, full of facilities and clean apartement in an ancient palace. Mrs Marion Zammit is a perfect owner, she's polite, helpful if you need information and careful. She found out facilities (hig chair and little bed) for our baby. In a 2 weeks of staying we had nothing to complain We higly recommend it. Response: Dear Guest, It has been a great pleasure to meeting you and your family and having you at 'Luz Del Sol'. It is a great satisfaction for me that love and care in looking after the apartment find the pleasure of my welcoming guests. Really hope to see you again at some point. With my kindest regards, Marion |

My husband and I had a fantastic month in Marion's beautiful apartment set into the cliffside below Mdina. The view from the kitchen is amazing; I set up my office in the little breakfast nook so I could look out across half of Malta, watching fireworks in a different town every single night. We were there in June when Malta is hot and dry, but the apartment stayed deliciously cool and we never even touched the aircon (good thing, because power is indeed expensive). The kitchen is stunning, modern and fully outfitted. The little loft above it is quite comfy; it was good to have the option to pull out the couch and sleep upstairs where it's bright and airy. Marion was super friendly and helped us get settled and find what we needed. We found Rabat and Mdina to be the most walkable part of Malta, so it was super conveinient that we could just stroll up the stairs and around the corner to get there. The public busses are also right there, but going anywhere except Valetta takes a long time and the closer cliffs and beaches are more easily accessed by taxi. If you're trying to decide whether to go to the Hypogeum, I suggest you instead check out the catacombs & crypts a few minutes away in Rabat where you can walk around by yourself without a guide. Response: Dear Guest, It makes me so happy to know that you have spent a fantastic month on our beautiful Island and you have taken with you a lot of great memories, history and culture. It is so nice to know that the lovely views and fireworks from Luz Del Sol's private balcony has inspired your work and helped you to be creative :). Thank you so much for your lovely comments and will look forward to seeing you again. Kind regards, Marion |
