the 4rooms hotel
B&B | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
The 4rooms house is a rustic boutique hotel set in the middle of Gunehar in Himachal Pradesh, India, 70 km from MacLoadgunj. An old merchant's house once totally destroyed by fire, it has been painstakingly restored in traditional style with traditional materials (mud, wood, bamboo etc.) but keeping modern standards in mind. As part of the 4tables project, 4rooms offers you an unique living experience in the middle of a quiet Himalaya village away from the larger tourist towns.
Whether you want to get to know the life of a village, or you want to wander in the pristine surroundings, whether you want to do paragliding, visit local temples, participate in one of our special activities or just hang out on your terrace to finish those last notes, at the 4rooms house you can wake up to the noise of a village instead of cars and hawkers before you start a day of explorations.
Our well-appointed rustic rooms have comfortable bathrooms, terraces, a garden, wifi, tea-and-coffee making facility etc. (BUT NO TV!) to make you feel at home. The 4tables restaurant is just down the road and offers delicious fusion cuisine. Our occasional cultural activities such as movie screenings, concerts, art happenings are, of course, open to all. We can also help you organize your activities and your further travels.

The Himalayan North India region
Set on the slopes of the Dhauladhar-Himalaya and overlooking the fertile Bir-Gunehar Valley, the village Gunehar is an untouched little corner of the Kangra Valley, away from the hustle and bustle of the usually chaotic tourist towns. The region is dominated by mountains, streams, villages and little towns, and there are a number of interesting visiting options starting from HH the Dalai Lama's exile domicile McLoadgunj to the tea estates of Kangra and numerous ancient classical Hindu temples.
Once on the edge of "Indian Civilisation", even today this area is a transitional zone between the mainstream Hindu/North-Indian cultureland of the plains and the ideosyncretic cultures of the people of the Himalaya interiours. This makes for great reflections as well as, given the geographic perticulars, great walks/treks into the interiours of the Himalayas.
The weather here is temperate in summer, romantic in Monsoon, and cold and foggy in winter. The two most pleasant seasons to visit are aspring and autumn.
PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT IN MCLOADGUNJ!!!
Gunehar is predominantly a village of Gaddis and Bara Bhangalis, whose original homes are further in the interiors of the mountains, beyond the Dhauladhar Range. Since most of these people are semi-nomadic shepherds, and since the extremely cold winters cut off their villages from the Indian mainland for more than half a year, they have traditionally had winter dwellings on the southern slopes of the Himalaya such as Gunehar.
Today, this traditional way of living and trading is still quite intact in Gunehar. Most people still move between their original homes in the interiors and the Jandher, keeping old traditions (and the old routes) alive. Also, Gunehar still retains its old-time charm and especially its unique culture.
Gunehar can be the base for some great, other-worldly treks to the untouched Himalayan interiors.
Gunehar is also venue to our biannual contemporary arts event, ShopArt/ArtShop. Traces of our last exhibition (2013) can still be found all over the village, plus there is a gallery of this above the 4tables.
