The 4rooms house is a rustic boutique hotel set in the middle of Gunehar in Himachal Pradesh, India, 70 km from MacLoadgunj. An old merchant's house once totally destroyed by fire, it has been painstakingly restored in traditional style with traditional materials (mud, wood, bamboo etc.) but keeping modern standards in mind. As part of the 4tables project, 4rooms offers you an unique living experience in the middle of a quiet Himalaya village away from the larger tourist towns.

Whether you want to get to know the life of a village, or you want to wander in the pristine surroundings, whether you want to do paragliding, visit local temples, participate in one of our special activities or just hang out on your terrace to finish those last notes, at the 4rooms house you can wake up to the noise of a village instead of cars and hawkers before you start a day of explorations.

Our well-appointed rustic rooms have comfortable bathrooms, terraces, a garden, wifi, tea-and-coffee making facility etc. (BUT NO TV!) to make you feel at home. The 4tables restaurant is just down the road and offers delicious fusion cuisine. Our occasional cultural activities such as movie screenings, concerts, art happenings are, of course, open to all. We can also help you organize your activities and your further travels.

The Himachal Pradesh region

Set on the slopes of the Dhauladhar-Himalaya and overlooking the fertile Bir-Gunehar Valley, the village Gunehar is an untouched little corner of the Kangra Valley, away from the hustle and bustle of the usually chaotic tourist towns. The region is dominated by mountains, streams, villages and little towns, and there are a number of interesting visiting options starting from HH the Dalai Lama's exile domicile McLoadgunj to the tea estates of Kangra and numerous ancient classical Hindu temples.

Once on the edge of "Indian Civilisation", even today this area is a transitional zone between the mainstream Hindu/North-Indian cultureland of the plains and the ideosyncretic cultures of the people of the Himalaya interiours. This makes for great reflections as well as, given the geographic perticulars, great walks/treks into the interiours of the Himalayas.

The weather here is temperate in summer, romantic in Monsoon, and cold and foggy in winter. The two most pleasant seasons to visit are aspring and autumn.

McLeod Ganj

PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT IN MCLOADGUNJ!!!

Gunehar is predominantly a village of Gaddis and Bara Bhangalis, whose original homes are further in the interiors of the mountains, beyond the Dhauladhar Range. Since most of these people are semi-nomadic shepherds, and since the extremely cold winters cut off their villages from the Indian mainland for more than half a year, they have traditionally had winter dwellings on the southern slopes of the Himalaya such as Gunehar.

Today, this traditional way of living and trading is still quite intact in Gunehar. Most people still move between their original homes in the interiors and the Jandher, keeping old traditions (and the old routes) alive. Also, Gunehar still retains its old-time charm and especially its unique culture.

Gunehar can be the base for some great, other-worldly treks to the untouched Himalayan interiors.

Gunehar is also venue to our biannual contemporary arts event, ShopArt/ArtShop. Traces of our last exhibition (2013) can still be found all over the village, plus there is a gallery of this above the 4tables.

"unsafe, unreliable and unwelcoming"

the place looks great from the outside. frank the owner has spent time in europe and made efforts to build the house with consideration for the traveler's needs. however there is no service and… More

It appears that this guest is not used to living in villages and doesn't understand the concept of a Home-Stay OR 'being a guest' and even less has any appreciation of what we do here or what it takes to run a place like this in a remote Indian village.
We welcome everybody who is ready to abide by certain rules and timings that we have to set if we are to serve our guests properly. But we do not appreciate when guests get rude and abusive to the staff-- and to me when I, as in this case, try to explain why we need to plan certain things in advance.
We are neither 'unreliable" (yes, you DO need to plan your meals in advance with us since it needs to be prepared), 'unsafe' (I know of very few villages safer than this) nor 'unwelcoming' (in fact I spend a whole evening with this guest, after having cooked him a meal myself, trying to help him with his travel plans). But if you are, as our guest, incapable of understanding that this is our home and our village and that you are a guest in this space, you are welcome to go somewhere else. We did not create this space 'for consumption' and believe in a guest-host relationship based on interaction, understanding and cooperation. You are not a client but our guest!
I could have denied that this guest had stayed with us and so prevented his review from appearing but I chose not to precisely to make this point (the lost "rating stars" are well worth getting this message across!): 4rooms is not a typical and average all-under-one-roof hotel where you can ring for room service or just walk in and demand 'service' at the press of a button. We are a very small and dedicated team with a wide range of responsibilities who will do anything for you, but this requires a certain amount of patience and a spirit of cooperation from our guests. This I have clearly stated on this portal, on our website and in the info-brochure put out in each room. All our guests apart from this one appreciate the amount of care and work we put in to make the 4rooms and all our other village projects possible and the visit of our guests memorable. But if you are not interested in our activities, our village and our way of doing things, there are plenty of other, regular hotels around to chose from.
