The Larnaka District
The island of Aphrodite, is the name given to the ancient island of Cyprus. It is said that the island was home to the goddess of love. An with 340 days of sunshine and winter temps hitting up to 22C. Not to mention the immense variety of landscapes, featuring everything from groves of blossoms and sun-drenched beaches to snow-capped Mount Olympus, legendary home of the Greek Gods. It's easy to see why a goddess would have made this her home.
The Larnaca district is found towards the south-east of the island. It is the home of the main international airport of Cyprus and Larnaca also houses the island’s second commercial port and boasts a large marina. The District is one of the island’s major tourist destinations with around 3 million tourists visiting the island each year. Larnaca town also has some great night life.
With 25 kms of beaches including the popular Finikoudes and McKenzie beaches as well as the many cultural sites to visit, there is a huge variety of things to do in the Larnaca area. Larnaca is the oldest city of Cyprus, originally known as Kition or Kittium, and is believed to have been founded by Noah’s great-grandson Kittim. Unlike the other ancient cities of Cyprus, Larnaca still exists on the original site which dates back over 6000 years. Larnaca has a rich cultural heritage that can be traced back to the arrival of the Mycenaean Greeks in the 13th century BC when it was a rich seaport and a major centre of the copper trade.
The Salt Lake in winter fills with migrating birds including pink flamingos who are a spectacular sight. In summer the water evaporates leaving a crust of salt and grey dust.
Something different on a hot day is to drive up the Troodos mountains with spectacular views with lots of local shopping buying food & gifts. If you get a chance stop at one of the local village markets on your journey and you will find many fresh groceries and hand made goods and souvenirs. Such as Halloumi Cheese which is one of the many speciality food product Cyprus is famous for. It is manufactured with care in the tradtitional way it has been for decades. Visit Agros a remote village on the southern side of Troodos mountain range for a picturesque walk. In 2008 the village was declared one of the top 20 European Destinations of Excellence.
MS Zenobia was a Swedish built Challenger-class RO-RO ferry launched in 1979 that capsized and sank close to Larnaca, Cyprus, in June 1980 on her maiden voyage. She now rests on her port side in approximately 42 metres (138 ft) of water and was named as one of The Times top ten wreck diving sites in the world in 2003
Mazotos has all of the traditional charm you might expect with its shuttered houses, churches and olive groves. The locals who live in the village are used to the slower pace of life and the Village is the polar opposite to say, Ayia Napa. The Village is a quiet getaway from city life and as such has become a popular spot for City high flyer's from Nicosia who have chosen this village as the location for their second homes. As well as two well stocked supermarkets and a selection of tavernas. The village also has a traditional yet modern Amphitheatre, which is the site of many a community play in the warmer months and is very popular with the locals and holiday makers alike.
Mazotos is ideally located for residential, retirement and leisure purposes, being 4 minutes by car to the beach, 8 minutes from the new championship PGA golf and leisure complex at Tersefanou (to be completed 2012/3) and about 20 minutes from Maroni, the home of "Wonderworld", the proposed water and theme park. The Camel park is 5 minutes away and a great family visit, they also serve excellent food and are open all day. There is also a children's amusement park within 10 minutes of the village.
The next village along, Kiti, has 2 fantastic bakeries and a good range of shops, restaurants and amenities. There is a petrol station that can be used 24 hours a day and a large Orphanides supermarket located at Dromolaxia Avenue which is open till 8PM 7 days a week. There is also a 24 hour grocery shop on the main drag.
A short trip down the coast is the wonderful coastal town of Zygi. With it's world famous fish tavernas it is a must for any sea food lovers.
