Home description
Set in over one acre of mature gardens and built around 1842, Maison Ohia is in SW France in the beautiful Soule valley. Just over one hour from the coastal resort of Biarritz and some 45min from Spain, the house enjoys plenty of natural sunlight and lovely views of the surrounding Pyrénées. The Soule valley itself rises into high mountains - snow-capped from autumn to late spring. The house, built of stone and wood beams, is full of character, but with modern facilities. The picturesque towns and villages in the area provide many attractions, and there are plenty of activities available in the hills and mountains of the Pyrenees for those who like energetic pastimes. The very beautiful coast and seaside towns are within easy reach.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region
Aquitaine is the largest region of France. Situated in the south-west corner of the country, its coastline runs from the Gironde estuary to the border with Spain and includes the popular coastal towns of Biarritz and Arcachon both of which are enjoying a strong resurgence. Biarritz is an important surfing centre, whilst Arcachon is a popular weekend retreat for the people of Bordeaux. South of Biarritz, the small coastal towns of the French Basque country are delightful at any time of the year. Inland, the mountains of the Pyrénées rise from their foothills near the coast, towards the higher peaks offering a dramatic background for year-around activities such as walking, climbing, cycling and skiing.
Two other important towns in the region are Bayonne, with its narrow streets of half-timbered houses painted in the bright reds and greens of the Basque country, and Pau, with its impressive Chateau and Boulevard des Pyrénées which offers a panoramic view of the mountains right from the town centre!
British visitors have been attracted by the climate of Aquitaine for more than 150 years. The region enjoys long, hot summers and, in the High Pyrénées, plenty of snow in winter.
Mauleon-Licharre / Ohia area
Maison Ohia is about 10mins drive from Mauléon-Licharre, a small French town with good supermarkets, petrol stations, an outdoor pool and other services. The town square has cafes and traditional French shops, and hosts the Basque game of ‘pelota’ throughout the summer, and various fêtes. There’s also the Château d’Andurain (an impressive 16th century building), and an old castle above the town. The Tour de France often goes near the Maison Ohia area.
