Weavers cottage
About the home
The cottage is spacious and works as an excellent base whether your interest is exclusively or a mix of walking, cycling, history, nature, food, fun times with the kids or simply cocooning and locking the world out. it carries a 3 star Visit Britain rating.
Bonsall is a pretty and quiet village, linked to the famous Limestone Way path and blessed by two great pubs and a cafe-restaurant. It has two atmospheric spacious bedrooms, a galleried study, dining area , luxury bathroom and kitchen. You can explore the region by the network of footpaths or strike out by car or bike to the nearby historic attractions such as Chatsworth Hall, Haddon Hall and Arkwright's Mill, a World Heritage Site.
Eat in or out on the dining terrace with only the sounds of farm and wildlife for company, or stroll to one of the village pubs. There are too many other good eating options in nearby towns and villages than there is room to mention here, but Michelin-starred Fischer's Hall at Baslow perhaps should be.
Serious walkers, climbers and cyclists have endless choices beginning at the doorstep or from points across the National Park.

The Matlock / Bonsall area
Bonsall was voted Central England village of the year in 2009.
http://www.calorvillageoftheyear.org/england/category-winners-2009-2010/regional/bonsall.htm
It is set in a deep sided dale beneath Masson Hill, a mile east of Matlock Bath and a mile north of Cromford in Derbyshire. Bonsall Brook rises on the upland and flows S. E toward Cromford where it proved significant in Richard Arkwrights choice of site for his mill. The 13th century stone built St James's Church stands in a prominent position overlooking the village. It has a fine tower surrounded by crowns and gargoyles and is surmounted by a splendid spire. The church has had many additions and extensions throughout the centuries. The village has two pubs with regular entertainment.
Cromford (down the hill!) is very definitely worth taking a closer look at, because it is steeped in industrial history and often called the cradle of the industrial revolution.
Before 1770, Cromford was little more than a cluster of cottages around an old packhorse bridge and a chapel where travellers gave thanks for a safe journey. All that was soon to change with the arrival of one man, Richard Arkwright. He began to build the worlds first successful water powered cotton spinning mill here in 1771 . Others copied his ideas and soon water powered cotton spinning mills began to spring up in Europe and America.
Cromford mill is now a world heritage site. The mill is open everyday and attracts visitors from all over the world. It has a visitors centre, shops and a cafe and plans are in hand for a major exhibition with working machinery, meeting rooms for schools and other educational groups, a library and a study centre.
There are 3 pubs in Cromford, one of which, the Greyhound Hotel was built by Arkwright, to house visitors to the mill and for the use by the local labour force. The other 2 are the Bell inn on North street and the Boat Inn on scarthin lane, where there is also an excellent little bookshop. Cromford is an excellent fly-fishing centre and good rock-climbing is to be had nearby. The Cromford Steam Fair is an annual event held in Cromford meadows.

Really cozy cottage with a full kitchen, 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and 2 loos. Well laid out outside space - terraced garden with multiple levels. The cottage was clean, the linens were fresh and the place was dust free when we arrived. There were clear instructions to use the appliances, information about access to wi-fi, etc. Although we did quite a bit of exploring during our stay there, Weavers cottage is the kind of place where you are happy to just relax and do nothing. We had a great experience and would definitely visit again. |

This charming cottage has a great location in a pretty village and is a gentle stroll to The Barley Mow pub which we would recommend for food. The kitchen is well equipped and it is comfortably furnished. There is an outdoor eating area, although the steps are steep in the garden. Great walks in the area. We enjoyed our stay and would love to return again sometime. |
Guestbook for Weavers cottage
"Loved the house, we just shut ourselves away for the weekend and enjoyed the peace. The restaurant recommendations were spot on." Mr Bhatia, London
"We took my 13-year-old daughter and her friend for the week. The countryside is spectacular and encouraged us all to paint. The steam room was a welcome comfort after the walks. The youngsters set up their own den in the wilderness. We just laughed a lot!" Mrs S. Vaughan, Northampton
"It was the weekend of the Wirksworth Trail,..amazing. 100 homes and public buildings exhibiting and selling art of every description. I never saw anything like it, and needed an extra suitcase to get home. And yes, the house was amazing. (And the wi-fi saved my life as still had to stay in touch with work..." A. Elser, Hamburg
"We hit the weather right, and caught the last of the Bonsall Carnival Week. The "world famous" hen race is a sight to be seen. Recommend the Barley Mow for the landlord's tales. We ate in the garden most of the time, and just loved the smells, sounds and views of the church." S.Leroy, Brussels
"The kids loved Gullivers, Chatsworth, Matlock Bath...the garden of course...and the park at Matlock. There's just something very English and old worldly about the area, without it being quaint or touristy." G.Mann, Faversham
