Standwell House is a Stone Built Detached House with large private Court Yard with the benefit of woodlands to explore immediately to the side of the house.

Turn down the hill to the right and within 2 minutes the Cromford Canal is there to greet you.

The quaint Whatstandwell Train Station is located across the road from Standwell House taking you over a little bridge and onto the platform taking minutes into Matlock, Cromford, Belper, Alfreton, Derby, Buxton, Nottingham etc.

The Derwent Valley Mills are within close proximity to Standwell House. These mills are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Richard Arkwright Mill in Cromford, Masson Mill in Matlock & Strutt's North Mill in Belper are all worth a visit for their history and their shopping facilities.

If you choose Standwell House as your holiday destination you will arrive to find a 'Welcome Brochure' giving you full details of local events, day/evening eateries, local walks, local amenities. We have also included titled list of DVD/Books/Games Library for you to enjoy. We have ensured the book gives you easy quick instructions of 'where to find' things around the house and 'how to use' things around the house, so you quickly become comfortable and relaxed.

****please note applicable to Family Bookings- whilst the property is suitable for children of all ages - the ground floor has flagstone flooring and therefore attention must be paid by the parents as any fall by a young toddlers remains the parents responsibility. Upstairs we have light beige carpets and therefore we do not allow shoes upstairs - and we don not have Stair Gates - again this remains the parents responsibility - we would like each and everyone of our Guest who book with us to experience the house

in as much perfect condition each time - therefore if each Guest does not take this into consideration this makes our costs too high to make good each time and thus will not allow us to offer the house at the prices offered

The Heart of England/Peak District

Derbyshire is renowned for its beautiful landscape and copious places of interest and walks - visitors are spoilt for choice. Derwent Valley is a World Heritage Site and we are privileged to have Standwell House amongst this wonderful setting.

Sir Richard Arkwright Mill located at Cromford has over the years been restored and now offers a number of individual shops and cafe - well worth a visit 2.8 miles

The famous 'John Smedleys' Factory which has been in operation for over 200 years is open to the public at weekends located at Lea being approx 2.5 miles.

If Shopping is on your mind then Masson Mill - another Heritage site - is a 4 storey mill converted to selling clothes, household goods and offers good food - again well worth a visit - you can easily spend a good half a day there. approx 3.8 miles

Crich Tramway Village famous for its old style tramways is a fantastic day out - approx 1 mile

Strutt's North Mill - part of the World Heritage - has lovely shopping facilities plus the town of Belper has lovely individual shops approx 5.5 miles


Standwell House is fortunate to be located amongst this dreamy landscape - always looking green & lush.

Go round the corner into Holloway woods at any time of the year and you will find wonder!

The bluebells in Spring are amazing, as too are the wild garlic plants which flower giving off a tantalising scent. Summer brings early morning bird song and Autumn shows glorious shades of colour and if Winter brings the Snow it's just a picture post card to see.

Walk along the Cromford Canal or pop to Crich Village where you will find local village bakery serving tasty food, The cafe that appeared in the filming of 'Peak practice' some years ago, but none the less you can say ' you were there'.

Less than 1 mile away walk up to visit the famous Tramway Museum this is sign posted 4 cottages up from the house on the left hand side and take the most breath taking of walks over the hill top taking in all the views before reaching your destination.

If you fancy a little shopping there is Masson Mill Shopping Village which caters for people of all ages this is located along the A6 just 4 mins from Cromford.

Should you be staying over a weekend and fancy a nice Sunday Lunch 'The Bear' at Alderwasley gets your taste buds alight the moment you enter, it's a lovely walk over the canal bridge and up to the left where you will see the signs to Alderwasley which is approx. 2.5 miles

Standwell house also boasts it's own quaint train station which is located across the road which takes you over the little bridge onto the platform which is located along the A6 (train station is not visible from house or heard) You can travel further afield if you have arrived without a car, it takes minutes to Cromford, Matlock, Alfreton, Buxton, Derby,Nottingham etc

"The perfect place to relax & get away from it all."

This house is fabulous, the décor, layout & whole character of the house are beautiful. As soon as you walk in it just has a lovely feel to it.
Our party ranged from 8 - 84 years & everyone loved the house.
We were looking for somewhere to stay over Christmas to relax & recharge our batteries. We wanted a peaceful place to stay in the countryside without being too far away from amenities, Standwell house ticked all the boxes.
We have stayed in lots of holiday cottages but this is by far the best one, the attention to detail is outstanding.
I was nervous about cooking Christmas dinner in a strange kitchen but it was so well set out and stocked with every piece of equipment we needed (and more).
If my lottery numbers came up this would be our families dream house.
The icing on the cake was the lovely owners who were so kind & friendly.
10/10 from our family.

"Welcoming Home"

Standwell house is fully equipped with eveything you could need for your stay from the kitchen through to the bathrooms. Toni was extremely helpful & went out of her way to make us feel welcome (Even bought us a BBQ!)
The house is located on a busy road but don't let this put you off as it can barely be heard in the house itself. The drive fits 2 cars (as the gate is locked to the rear garden / drive) the kitchen is large & over euqipped if anything. Plenty of room in the fridge / freezer even has a seperate utility. The living room has 3, 2 seater sofas TV/DvD, games, piano etc. The upstairs has 2 standard bedrooms & a Master with en-suite which is nice with a power shower.plenty of towels in each room for all the guests. The garden is paved with a few chairs & a table if you want to sit out. The forest backs directly onto the garden & alongside the house. There is a canal a short walk away & the train platform from Whatstandwell which is a short ride away from Matlock etc. There are supermarkets within short driving distance. The pub at the end of the road is closed but we did come across a nice pub/restaurant in Ambergate just a fe miles away which was lovely inside & served good food! If you are wanting to order take-out you are best collecting as we spent ages looking through the menus in the house to find no one would deliver to the house & in the end ending up settling for pizza from a takeaway through just-eat which was the only one. All in all we had a pleasant stay & would recommend.

"A well appointed and very comfortable cottage (5 bedroomed house!) in a delightful part of Derbyshire."

We found the cottage spotlessly clean and furnished and fitted with every conceivable thing for an extended stay. It is close to local walks and attractions yet only a short drive from a supermarket for groceries. Public transport (bus and rail) are nearby. Parking on the drive looked limited at first sight but at one time we managed to get 3 cars parked (with a little care). Arrival and departure protocols are simple and the cleaning staff friendly, cheerful and efficient.

"Home from home!"

For a holiday rental this building was like you were borrowing someone's country pad for a week. I mean by that it was well kitted out with everything, and the decor was beautiful. The bathrooms were done as you would your own house, good quality and spacious. The furniture was all good, no 'old stuff I didn't want in my house' as I've seen in other cottage rentals! Comfy beds, lovely bedding. All bedrooms were spacious, although the one with two beds a little tighter but absolutely fine for the kids to share. There was only one shower, in the ensuite, which can elongate 'getting ready' time with 7 of us, especially for us in the main bedroom (but was gorgeous, could spend a week in the shower!). Also the bathroom door (ensuite) kept popping open even when locked, luckily we were all family! Wood burner was nice of a chilly evening (plenty of!), and central heating was good. Nice big TV, DVD and sky box for free view. Kitchen was well kitted out, maybe could use a couple more saucepans. Although we took it with us there was paper towels, washing up liquid, sponge, dw tablets etc so we needn't have. Ironing board, iron, washing machine all available. No drier, but an airer available. Parking was enough for two no more. Key access was easy, and there was a small back yard, with some seating but too cold for us anyway. There were some walks nearby, up into woods was a bit steep and slippy in the rain, but riverside walk was lovely. Lots of leaflets with things to do etc in the hall and kitchen, maybe a pamphlet stand would be good. We ordered from the Indian in the pamphlet pile and it was lovely.
Would go back again if we want to visit the area. Thanks for a lovely time!

"Beautifully presented, well thought out property in a lovely setting."

We stayed at this property for a long week end whilst visiting the area for a family wedding and extended short break. The property was immaculate when we arrived and had every thing we could possibly need. The cottage is very well proportioned and accommodated four adults and two young children tearing around very well. We even had 6 other family members invite them selves over for a cup of tea the day after the wedding and the large kitchen hosted 10 adults and 4 children well.
The surrounding area is also beautiful and nice to explore, a short walk down the road takes you to the canal which is a lovely family walk. Toni, the owner, couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.

"A wonderful find!!"

My family and I arranged a 3 day get together over the Easter break and what a wonderful find this house was! It exceeded our expectations! On arrival we unlocked the door and it certainly gave us the wow factor! There was attention to detail given in each spacious room of the house, eg individual throws placed on sofas and chairs in the lounge to make it even more cosy than it already was! Comfortable beds, luxurious linens and spotlessly clean throughout! Great canal walks just around the corner and over the road from the house! We all had a great time and would love to go back!

"Great place to stay when in Derbyshire"

We had a fantastic week here in Derbyshire. It was central to so many interesting places that it was hard to choose where to go. The kids enjoyed it so much that they did not want to go home! We were a little disappointed that the nearby pub had closed down but that didn't slow us down a bit.
