Toad Cottage is situated in the old Blacksmiths Yard in the heart of the Derbyshire village of Two Dales and it personally managed cleaned and checked every week by the owners. This historical building is believed to have originally been built early in the 17th century as the barn for the local blacksmith but is known to have spent some time as part of the Blacksmith Arms Public House. The building was tastefully converted some years ago into living accommodation but has lost none of it's natural charm with exposed beams, an open fireplace and many original fixtures and fittings.

From the front door, a short walk across a couple of fields and two roads, takes you directly into the Peak District National Park where you can explore the open moorland, wooded valleys and the famous gritstone outcrops. Several trails are within easy reach and ideal for experienced walkers, casual ramblers or cyclists.

Bakewell, Matlock and Chesterfield are all near by and for the day out you will be spoilt for choice with Chatsworth House, Heights of Abraham, Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers.

"Lovely cottage, great location, perfect holiday"

I stayed here with my husband and three children aged 9,6 and 1. Owners met us at the door and were very accommodating and friendly. The house (we didn't realise) is "upside down", the … More

We were both pleased and very disappointed by this review. Running holiday cottages is extremely time consuming and hard work and it is lovely to receive 5 stars and true appreciation for what we are providing.
However, stairs with very active 1 year olds will always be an issue – very few houses have doors at the bottom and the top to properly isolate stairs and due to the construction of the staircase, it is not possible to securely attach a stair gate or door to the top of the stairs. If we provide a stair gate, we are legally responsible for any accident that occurs and advice we have been given is that no stair gate is far better than a stair gate which might give way under the weight of a child pushing at it and rattling it from above. We do highlight the danger to guests and make sure that they are aware of the situation and blocking the stairs is easy and resolves the problem straight away.
The comment about cleanliness shocked us. We undertake all the cleaning ourselves and pride ourselves on presenting a very clean house. Many, many guests return time after time and cleanliness is the one aspect we focus on and get commendations for. We have a structured approached to cleaning and can assure you that all skirting boards are cleaned prior to guests arrival. We know this as a fact on this occasion because we broke the mop and had to resort to cleaning the tiled floor by hand.
However what we offer is a very old, quirky, traditional, 17th century Derbyshire sandstone house with two foot thick walls, sash windows, oak beams and a large open fireplace. Add to this the bad weather experienced in this particular week, tiled flooring throughout most of the downstairs of which part is the hall where you come in and take off your muddy shoes and wet coats, 3 young kids running around and it is not inconceivable that on a newly painted white skirting board a duster is required again on the skirting boards fairly quickly.
We do not offer hermetically sealed and sterile hotel rooms that can be made spotless within 10 minutes - it takes us 3 ½ hours to clean to the cottage on every changeover. In addition, we are unable to replicate people's homes that have been designed around very young children.
As providers of holiday accommodation we try to meet everyone's aspirations and it upsets us when we don't succeed but can assure you that when we left this cottage it had been cleaned to a very high standard. We urge people to call to discuss what they are looking for and to ask us questions about the property as it is not possible to put everything on a website. We will be personally writing to address this customer's concerns further but in view of the comments made we have now made the decision to not take bookings in the future from families with children under 5 years of age.
