Home description
The semi-detached gite is part of the main house which is a typical Charentais style farmhouse centred around a sunny courtyard - great for al fresco dining - in the village of Bagnizeau which has a population of about 200. We also have 2 bedrooms with en suite facilities in the main house available for B & B. There is a back garden with a lawn, shaded patio area and above ground 15' diameter pool. In the village there is a park with a boules area and tennis court, we have boules, rackets and tennis balls available for those who feel energetic enough to play!
There are bicycles available for guests' use and we are keen to encourage this by providing local maps and suggested routes through the countryside which is ideal for cycling. If you wish to bring your own bikes we have ample secure storage for them. Alternatively let us know if you are coming to house hunt and we will do what we can to help you

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Second only to the Cote d'Azur the Charente Maritime and Charente are the sunniest departments in France. In summer there are many fields of beautiful sunflowers, lavender and of course grape vines as this is the heart of cognac and pineau production. The town of Cognac itself is only 25 minutes away and there you will find many of the big cognac houses such as Hennessey, Martell and Remy Martin, where you can have guided tours to learn how cognac is made.
The historic town of Saintes, about 35 minutes drive, is well worth visiting and there you will find lovely pedestrianised shopping streets, an impressive Roman amphitheatre, art galleries and museums. There is also a very good food market here every Sunday morning.
About 40 minutes away is the town of Angouleme, the departmental capital of the Charente, and a walk round the ramparts of the old town gives spectacular views of the surrounding area. On the outskirts of Angouleme there is a large lake with a beach for swimming and a sailing school where you can hire sailing dinghy's, canoes, etc.
If you fancy a trip to the coast there are some beautiful beaches such as Royan, about 1 hour, and a visit to La Rochelle is a must with its huge marina and many seafood restaurants along with some very chic shops.
Matha / Bagnizeau area
The country town of Matha is less than 2 km from Bagnizeau and here you will find a range of small shops, banks, estate agents, hairdressers, 4 supermarkets and 2 restaurants.
15 minutes away is the lovely town of St. Jean d' Angely with its quaint town centre and ancient twin towered Abbey. Here there is a very good market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. In St. Jean there is an impressive indoor swimming pool complex next to the park and boating lake, and some of the bigger retail stores on the outskirts of the town.
Also 15 minutes away is the market town of Aulnay with its picturesque town centre where you can enjoy al fresco refreshments and the regular Sunday morning market.
A short drive away is a man made freshwater lake where you can swim and picnic with showers, toilets and a life-guard during the summer months.
The countryside around Bagnizeau is perfect for walking and cycling and we have bikes available for your use.
