Maison De Cognac
About the home
Hi and welcome to the Maison de Cognac, the newly renovated section of our old Charentaise Cognac house. as it's our first year of letting, we are offering extremely good reduced rate prices for 2013.
We are constantly adding more facilities to the property (just added a dishwasher) so please feel free to take a look at our web site www.maisondecognac.com for any further info.
We have kept the house as rustic and authentic as possible. The house boasts tons of character with oak beams (some still with some bark on from construction in the 1800's!), oeil de boeuf windows (bull's eye), stone walls, woodburning fires, terracotta floor tiles etc.
The whole property is set within walled grounds with wells, a stone built bread oven/bakery (now tool store!), attached stone-built “double long drop” WC (now with wood in it for the fires and housing the patio furniture).
We have left the garden simple but large enough for kids to have a run around in and there is a stoned patio area with an outside light for late night eating, chatting and drinking.
Bedrooms, which are all very large (approx. 35m2 each!) are as follows:
· La chambre des maitres: with en-suite bath, shower, wash-hand basin & WC. King size bed (and sofa bed chaisse longue)
· La chambre cachee: with a double and a single bed.
· Le grenier medterraneen: with a King size and a single bed
· La chambre de jardin with a King size and a single bed, en-suite shower, wash-hand basin & WC
La chambre citron vert is a large separate first floor bathroom (bath, wash-hand basin & WC) and on the ground floor is a further shower room (walk-in “wet room” shower, wash-hand basin & WC).
The kitchen has a gas (bottled) range-style cooker & electric oven, table & chairs, fridge/freezer & washing machine. (Dishwasher currently being added at time of going to press!). In the first floor bathroom you will find a tumble dryer, ironing board & iron.
The main lounge has a further table and chairs, a wood burning stove (although hopefully you won't feel the need to use it), a range of books & games and a DVD player and 36” TV screen (for DVDs only, no TV channels provided).
We have a dart board (and darts!!) and a table tennis table (with bats and balls) and there are tennis courts in the village (rackets and balls are available in the house). We've just concreted a floor in the attached barn for the table tennis and darts if you feel the inclination for a sporting challenge!
We have a Boules court in the side of the site that is still to be renovated.
This is the perfect location to get away from it all. A sleepy little hamlet full of houses that make it look like a Cotswold Village, but near enough to some beautiful Chateaux, historic towns, glorious beaches and great restaurants for you and the kids not to get bored.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Here you are in the “Fins Bois” region of Cognac grape production and also surrounded by many producers of Pineau Des Charentes. Temperatures reach the late 20s and early 30s any time from February onwards and so it can get very hot in the summer months. It obviously has very hot sunny days but it also receives some rain, ocassionally in the summer, which is great for grapes but not for you! Don't despair, there's plenty to do if this happens for a day or two. Places of interest: Cognac (20 mins) – lovely “old town”, plenty of Cognac distilleries, the River Charente and quite a few shops, bars and restaurants. Angouleme (30-40 mins) – beautiful historic buildings, a few good restaurants & shopping St Jean D’Angely (20 mins) old buildings, indoor pool, variety of bars & restaurants Rochefoucauld (45-60 Mins) – glorious Chateau La Rochelle (60 mins) – Has a fantastic maritime history, “old port” towers, lighthouses & beautiful parks. Plenty of shops and restaurants Fantastic beaches (c45 – 60 mins) (Royan/St Palais or up the coast to La Rochelle) Zoo at La Palmyre (c1 hour ) Golf courses are at Cognac, Angouleme, Saintes & St Palais
The Matha area
The local town of Matha has all the amenities you need to get by. It has 3 supermarkets, petrol (24 hour for card payments), shops, takeaways, a Pizzeria, boulangerie, bar, banks a Post Office and even what they laughingly call a Chateau (it's very small!) Surrounding Matha are a range of villages and hamlets with some lovely bars and small typically French restaurants. Neuvicq le Chateau is close by with a small Chateau and also a very good Cognac producer who does tours (Balluet). Slightly further afield Rouillac has an open air pool, restaurants and a slightly bigger supermarket
