BookThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Charente Maritime is an area which has its own micro climate, sometimes in winter you can experience freak warm spells and winter sunshine is much warmer than in the UK. The region is famous for the production of Cognac which is exported worldwide, and all the famous brands such as Hennesey, Martel, Courvoisier etc are based here, most offer organised tours including sampling. The area is steeped in history from the early troglodites to the Franks and the Romans, there are numerous historic sites, tours, museums and places of interest all within easy reach by car. Also there are some very beautiful sights to see from quaint fishing harbours, lovely sandy beaches and riverside walks. The landscape and countryside is a real treat during the summer. Another must visit place for the family is the world famous Futuroscope, an hour and a half away by car, a funfilled day out for the whole family suitable for all ages. Other large towns in the area well worth a visit are the coastal ports of La Rochelle and Rochefort, both have a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, shops, and things to do for the whole family.
The Matha / Migron area
You need only step outside the gates to appreciate the beautiful countryside ideal for walking or cycling. Also there is a museum locally covering the process of cognac distillery and chocolate making. Slightly further afield you will find the small town of Matha which has restaurants and bars and watersports. Local markets are held on various days and are highly recomended paticularly the ones at St Jean D'Angely or Saintes. All through the summer various fetes or activities are taking place in one of the many local communes, the area is made up of literally hundreds of small hamlets linked to a larger commune.

We stayed at the house at end of Aug for a week. As the other reviews have said it is in a great rural location, set back well away from the already quiet road. The house is around 3 years old and is finished to a very high standard. It has everything that you would find at home, dishwasher, washing machine etc etc. We were a group of 4 and there were more plates, cups & cutlery than we could ever use & it was all like new. Bernard the owner lives nearby but is at work all day so you only see him if you want something. It was nice to know that we had an English owner that we could call 24/7 if required. Overall it is a lovely clean, comfy family house that guarantees a peaceful relaxing holiday. |

Just returned from a terrific holiday at Les Vignes. Booking was made easy by the owner, Bernie, who was very helpful. The house is set on the edge of a working vineyard with great scenery all around... more |

We are a family of 6 adults, 2 teenagers and a baby and have just returned from a fantastic fortnight here. The house is beautifully laid out a equipped, with a large, secluded garden and the private pool was definitely welcome in the 85-90 degree heat. Any problems we had were almost immediately dealt with by the helpful owner Bernie who lives a short distance from the main house. The house is secluded but within easy reach of the little village which has a small but well stocked grocery shop, butchers and bakers. The cognac vineyard next door is well worth a visit, the owner speaking fluent English gave us a guided tour and allowed us to taste the superb cognac he produces. Also within easy reach is La Palmyre Zoo and Rochefort (beautiful town). |
