Mchanga Mdogo: Each room has a luxury sized traditional Swahili four-poster double bed, en-suite, ceiling fan and AC (if required – though the sea breeze makes this almost unnecessary!). They open up onto a spacious veranda where you can sit and take in the view, or read a book. Our hand-made coconut wood furniture is simple and stylish. Whilst the garden is shared with other guests it is secluded and full of quiet hideaways.

Further details outdoors

Panga Chumvi is situated right on the beach front. We have a natural feeling garden which has responded to the sea and the local surroundings. The restaurant is open to people wandering upon us from the beach, and our Chef has a fantastic reputation.

Panga Chumvi refers to the name traditionally given to this location, just outside Matemwe village. Above the resort, on the hillside, is a cave where, at high tide, the sea water reaches. ‘Chumvi’ means salt in Kiswahili, and ‘Panga’ is a shortening of ‘pahala’ – the place. Hence – Panga Chumvi – the place of salt. We are pleased to use a name that really means something, both to the people who have been living here for generations, and to those staying here for shorter periods.

We have built a relationship with the village for 20 years and predominantly employ local people whenever possible. We believe tourism can tread lightly and are always striving to move towards eco-awareness.

With the sea at our feet, we choose not to have aswimming pool - most days the sea provides long periods for swimming and snorkelling on our doorstep.

Further details

Do enquire if you have a special request - we can book out the whole compound for celebrations; the restaurant area is suitable for group meetings, seminars or workshops.

During high seasons our guests are a wide variety of fantastic, interesting visitors; and during the lower seasons a steady stream of people travelling to Zanzibar to experience a special calm and relaxing time away from it all enjoy our environment. With easy access to the rest of the island - you can choose to do nothing, or be extremely active - diving, snorkelling, swimming, kiet surfing, walking, visiting historical sites and spice farms,

or the ancient Jozani Forest.

The Zanzibar Archipelago region

Panga Chumvi Beach Resort is situated next to the village of Matemwe, on the north eastern coast of Zanzibar. The resort is right on the beautiful, white sand beach (the longest unbroken stretch of beach in Zanzibar), opposite the pristine coral reef of Mnemba Island.

Zanzibar has a long and fascinating history - as an island situated in the Indian Ocean with strong ties to the coastal peoples and culture. See for a brief description of some aspects of Zanzibars rich past.

Activites range from relaxing and dreaming in the sea breeze, to the many water-related activities such as swimming, diving snorkelling - all of which can be arranged for you.

The immediate surroundings include the village of Matemwe, which was originally a fishing village.

There is easy access to other parts of the Island, but why not enjoy a few days respite from the busy city life?
