The Crete region
The Messara region offers the discerning traveller a part of Crete away from the busy north of the Island. The area remains traditionally ‘Cretan’ despite the expanse of tourism and for those looking for the real Crete, this region provides a wide range of experiences.
We came to this area some 20 years ago and immediately became enthralled with its diverse culture, villages, mountains and above all the real warmth of the people.
The region is located on the edge of Messara Bay in South Central Crete with it’s west facing stunning golden beach and spectacular sunsets. It is rich in archaeology and Cretan culture including the Minoan palaces of Phaistos and Agia Triada and also the ancient city of Gortyn.
The area tourist season is generally April to November, although the weather is superb at the beginning and end of the season, some of the tavernas, etc close down and direct flights are not available, but flights / ferries can be found via Athens.
Matala / Pitsidia area
Pitsidia is a village, which sits on the road from Heraklion to Matala. The road by-passes the old village, so it is easily missed. The old village has a ‘platia’ or square at its centre, around which sits 5 Tavernas and a Kafenieon. The village boasts a number of small grocery shops masquerading as ‘supermarkets’, a hairdresser, specialist butcher and a state-of-the-art bakery. Some of the shops are simply doorways, which open up into the narrow streets with only one small room.
Pitsidia is the oldest village in the area. The Cretan residents live in a mixture of old and new dwellings, where generations have welcomed holidaymakers for many years.
The stunning golden beach of Commos is an easy walk, cycle or car hop from Pitsidia (1km), passing through vineyards, olive groves and allotments. Behind the beach is a newly discovered minoan port and will soon be opened as an archaeological site.
Matala is only 5km away and has its own glorious beach with tavernas, a market, shops and ameneties. It has a little nightlife with several music bars. It was once regarded as the best beach in Crete and is famous for its caves that are cut into the cliffs. The beach shelves gently at first and then relatively quickly making it suitable for children to play and for swimming.
How to get there
From many regional airports in the UK and Europe - EasyJet, GB Airways/Exel, Thomas Cook, First Choice, Thomsonfly, Olympic Holidays, Martin Air and many others. Mid week flights can be really cheap and you can go and return as you wish (eg. go Thursday, return Tuesday) You can take the bus from Heraklion or Chania, take a taxi or hire a car. Car hire is very reasonable - contact owner for special deals. The drive from the airport in Heraklion takes around 45 mins to Pitsidia and total tranquility away from the busy tourist areas.
