The Campania region
The bay of Naples is one of the most scenic stretches coast in the Mediterranean, dominated by Mount Vesuvius. The history of the city in every period can be seen in its monuments, churches, palaces, squares and streets. Today the city has many interesting sights and it is very difficult to choose what to visit! National Archaeological Museum (Piazza Museo, 19. Open 09h – 19h every day except Tuesdays) The building housing the museum was erected in the early 1600s. Over the years it was enlarged and new collections were added, among them the Farnese Collection and the archaeological finds from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia. Finally comes the coin collection, one of the most famous in the world. San Carlo Opera House (Via San Carlo. Open 09h – 12h except when rehearsals are taking place.) Built in 1737 for Charles III, 40 years prior to La Scala in Milan. One of the most famous opera houses in Europe, splendid in decoration and perfect in acoustics. Royal Palace Museum (next to the San Carlo Opera House. Closed on Wednesday). This is the museum of the 17th century Royal Palace where all the furniture, sculptures, porcelain and paintings belonging to the Bourbon dynasty are kept. Duomo Originally built about the end of the 12th century, the Cathedral of Naples has undergone several restorations over the centuries. The relics of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, are kept in the cathedral.
Massa Lubrense area
SORRENTO Sorrento is situated in a naturally strong position, on a tufo rock rising 50mts above sea level. Originally called “Surrentum”, the first known settlements were those of the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, followed in succeeding centuries by the Greeks and Romans. The early stages of the Roman Empire were a particularly prosperous time for all the Sorrento Peninsula, when Augustus and Tiberius brought fame to Capri.
The Correale Museum (Via Correale, 50. Open 09h – 14h, every day except Tuesday) The museum is housed in the 18th – century villa Correale, surrounded by a magnificent citrus grove and with a terrace rising steeply above the sea. The exhibits, displayed on three floors of the villa, include paintings from the 17th century Italian and European decorative china pieces. Many archeological finds from excavations in the Sorrento area are also on display.
The Intarsio Museum (Via San Nicola, 28. From April to October open 10h – 13h and 16h – 20h. From November to March open 15h – 19h, every day except on Mondays and public holidays). Housed in part of a recently restored Palazzo Pomarici Santomasi, the museum has a large collection of furniture and objects in marquetry produced by 19th century. The historical collection consists of paintings by 19th century Italian and foreign artists as well as prints and photographs.
