The Campania region
Campanian Cuisine One of the pleasures of an Italian holiday is trying the local cuisine. Naples, which is the capital of the Campania region, has gained a worldwide reputation for some of its dishes such as pizza. Cooking along the Amalfi Coast is very similar to that of Naples but with some refinements which can be found in the wide variety of Coast restaurants. Some local restaurants do not have a printed menu and simply tell you what is available. This does not mean that you will be charged excessively but usually indicates it has been freshly prepared for that day.
Massa Lubrense area
Local Markets No vacation would be complete without sampling one of the marvels of Italy: the market. The markets start in the early hours, and are much more than just grocery shopping; they are a combination of social outing and carnival. They sell almost everything, from fruit and vegetables, local specialties, cheeses, eggs, meat and fish, to flowers and plants, livestock, clothing, linens, hardware and crafts. Remember though, they'll all start packing up at noon, so the ideal routine is a prompt breakfast, a mid-morning serious shop and perusal of the stands, an aperativo on a sunny terrace and then back home to enjoy your purchases. Your Local Host will tell you which are the most interesting local markets in the area. The art of shopping at markets As shopping at country markets is as much an art as it is an experience, we offer a few suggestions to help you enjoy it: •Take a straw shopping basket with you; not only will it help you “go local”, but it will prevent your fingers being sliced off by plastic bag handles. (You can buy them at most markets, or your house may have one or two.) During hot weather it's a good idea to take an insulated bag too (available in the frozen foods section in the supermarkets) for keeping cheese, fish, etc. cool till you get home. •Do a quick tour of the market before buying anything; get your bearings then go round again to buy the best of what you’ve seen. •Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the vendors on how to prepare an unknown vegetable, or if you can sample the olives or strawberries. Ask to sample the cheese, prosciutto or spreads before you buy; most vendors will be happy to oblige. •Above all, observe the locals; watch where they shop for their huge variety of crusty breads, their cheese, their produce. Remember, they’ve been there before. By now, it should be nearly noon; time to find a seat on the nearest terrace for a coffee or a cooling drink, to watch the passing parade, and dream of the delights you are going to create with your purchases. Soon you’ll be asking, why do they only do this once a week? Interesting markets: Monday: Piano di Sorrento Tuesday: Sorrento and Ravello Wednesday: Amalfi (not in August) Thursday: Minori (not in August) Friday: Maiori (not in August) Massa Lubrense, village of San Francesco
