The Campania region

Campania is a region celebrated for its climate, the fertility of the lands and the astonishingly beautiful landscapes. The territory is mostly gentle hills, apart from the Matese mountains bordering Molise and the rugged Irpinia area. The Vesuvius on the Gulf of Naples is one of the very few still active volcanoes in Europe. The two beautiful gulfs of Naples and Salerno with the Amalfi coast, separated by the Sorrento peninsula, are world famous for the high cliffs, sandy bays, grottoes and islands (Ischia, Procida, Capri), each view an enchanting postcard picture, and such a great experience for the senses, the feel of the air, the odours of the pine trees, lemons and oranges, that the ancients rightly called this region "felix ager", a happy land.

PLACES TO VISIT

MARINA DEL CANTONE
Marina del Cantone overlooks on the gulf of Salerno and it is situated between the bay of Jeranto and Recommone's beach. You can reach it from Sant' Agata by bus or by car: it takes about 15 minutes and it's possible to park. Walking for 10 minutes, it's possible get to the beach of Recommone through a typical and panoramic path where you find, along your way, a cost guard tower built in the XV century, with the purpose of defence against the pirates. The coast of the bay created the mairmaids myth, trasformed into the three rocks called "Li Galli".

BAY OF JERANTO
The Bay of Jeranto represents one of the best walks in this area; you can reach the path from Sant'Agata sui due Golfi by car or by bus in 15 minutes. From the path you can admire the wonderful view of Capri, Amalfi coast, Marina del Cantone and San Costanzos' mount.

SORRENTO
A splendid and famous holiday resort, Sorrento stands on a terrace rising steeply above the sea on one of the most spectacular points of the Campanian coast. Because of its enchanting position and mild climate, sheltered by the surrounding hills, Sorrento has been a favourite resort since Romans times, (Agrippa, Augustus and Antonius all had villas here) and it became an elite tourist resort from the eighteenth century, its hotels welcoming such luminaries as Ibsen, Wagner and Nietzche.

POSITANO
Positano seems to be standing, leaning against the jagged mountain rock face, with many multicoloured houses that seem to be built in a single cluster, all on top of each other. The town is very unique and incredibly attractive, capable of attracting attention to many visitors. It is the kingdom of many flights of little steps, of narrow passageways enlivened and coloured by wonderful shops, lively bars and cafes, and restaurants specialised in seafood.

AMALFI
The "Amalfi Drive" is said to be one of the most spectacular roads in Europe and from Sorrento the winding cliff top road offers breathtaking panoramic views from every bend. Amalfi, now a thriving holiday resort, was once a powerful and prosperous marine republic, and homeland of Flavio Gioia, the inventor of the compass. The beautiful cathedral, with its ornate façade, stands at the top of steps leading up from the main square, and houses the remains of the patron saint of Amalfi, Saint Andrew.

ISLAND OF CAPRI
Capri is a sea of emotions, a dream, a million charming secrets to discover: the isle of Capri has two communes: Capri and Anacapri. It is sourrounded & bathed from the Mar Tirreno,
distant 35 km from the Neapolitan coasts and connected to the peninsula sorrentina from a submarine rocks
extension along 5 Km.There are many natural beauty like the Blue grotto and Faraglioni rocks. The easily way
to get on Capri island is embarking on the ferries from the port of Naples, or from Sorrento.

VESUVIO
Mt Vesuvius is the only active volcano in Continental Europe, the most populated and it is also the most extensively studued volcano on the Earth.
The current shape of the volcano is the result of the continual alternation between "explosive" type eruption, which have produced pyroclastic deposits

POMPEI - ERCOLANO
Pompei holds an intense fascination for visitors today. It is high on the list of Wonders of the World. Following the eruption of the Volcano Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, Pompei lay buried . The excavations begun in the 18th century, and are still being carried out today. You can still see some of the ancient streets of Pompei which include the remains of a roman cevilization dating back to 79 BC . The catastrophe of 79 AD destroyed Pompei but also Herculaneum. They have been submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardned into a soft tufa (a kind of course rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. You can reach Pompei and Herculaneum by train from Sorrento station that takes only 15 minutes from Sant' Agata.

"We have had a lovely 2 weeks in S.Agata with La Noce being a comfortable pleasant haven to return to at the end of each day. The surrounding area is beautiful with lots to see and do, from the hillside walks to the sights of the Amalfi Coast, Vesuvius, Pompei and others and your welcome and hospitality has been much appriciated." Thank you!
Karen + John - June 2008

"Thank you so much for an excellent week. Casa La Noce has been a perfect location for our last holiday "pre-parenthood"!! We loved the walks round here to Sorrento, the coast, to Massa Lubrense past olive groves and lemon trees. The food has been amazing and the shops have provided us with so much fantastic local produce than we could eat! Oh yes and cart-loads of apples from La Noce garden! "
Thank you again,
Colin & Rebecca Dallibar (+ 2 passengers)
