The place

Villa Max is built on the highest and narrowest area of the narrow Sorrento

Peninsula, which separates de Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno. The villa

is three-storey high and preserves its original and elegant 1800 architectonic

structure.

Upon arrival you will soon notice the house, white from up above, rising even

higher than the crowns of the huge umbrella-like shaped pines which stand

against the blue of the sky and the sea. You will see the terrace which crowns

the attic floor, and you will suddenly wish to be up there as soon as possible

to discover all the angles of the fantastic scenery around you.

You will realize that from the terraces of the villa you will enjoy an

enthralling view of both Gulfs. You will have specially the magical panorama of

the entire Gulf of Naples below your eyes over one side: a gulf dominated by the

“unsettling” cone-shaped outline of the Vesuvius. And you will notice the sea of

the Gulf of Salerno and the coast where Positano is located on the other side.

You will also see, between the two Gulfs, a part of the island of Capri, comely,

inviting and nearby.

The villa is in the middle of a 22,000-square-meter (about 236,806 square feet)

land. Around the villa there is a magnificent garden with high centenary pine

trees, shady pergolas and sun-drenched lawns: therein you will find the

swimming-pool, surrounded by a large sun-drenched lawn area. Not far from the

villa there is also a tennis court and a grassy area where helicopters can land.

The rest of the terrain is a sloping land which is also rich in woods and fruit

trees.

Its history

Yesterday….

The Coast of Sorrento, already a vacation destination since the Ancient Romans,

was chosen and loved as a holiday place by many educated, rich, and famous

travellers of northern Europe in the nineteenth century. Princes, literates and

wealthy families chose to build here their vacation homes.

In the most beautiful areas of the coast, large and sumptuous villas surrounded

by splendid gardens would rise. Villa Max is actually one example of homes built

during this period. It was built in 1892 by a rich German traveler who fell in

love with the region.

Such villas were often sets of intense and romantic love stories. How can one

possibly live amidst such exuberantly natural beauty of the Sorrento Peninsula

and not fall in love? And that is why it is said that the villa has been the set

of an intense love story between its owner, Max, and a lovely lady whose name

was Enrichetta…..

…today…

The villa has had different proprietors throughout its history. Nowadays you

will find all modern services which render it a splendid and cozy vacation home,

perfect for a group of friends who want to spend their holiday together.

The efficient division and size of the interior and outdoor spaces of the villa

allow each member of the group to not only have fun with the presence of their

friends with all the possible convenience but also enjoy some independence and

privacy whenever desired.

Villa Max has preserved its romantic fascination throughout times: you will find

it perfect also to host weddings and anniversary parties with your closest and

dearest friends!

The master bedroom is isolated and located on the attic floor: a true love nest…..

The house

The living area

Villa Max is a 1000-square-meter (about 10,764 square feet) three-storey house

which features an elevator.

On the ground floor you will find three spacious living-rooms elegantly

furnished and decorated in classical style. In the first living-room, you will

find an inviting living space consisting of several couches placed around a

large and age-old fireplace. The second living-room is furnished with dining

tables and large arched patio doors communicating with the garden. The third

living-room is used as a breakfast room with free breakfast hours for guests.

You will find that the room features pleasant and familiar furnishings: you may

have breakfast in your night gown any time you wish; as if you were in your own

house.

Next to the living-room, you will find two large kitchens fully equipped with

several stove-burners, an oven, a wood-fired oven to prepare pizza, a large

fridge with freezer, a microwave oven, a coffee maker, and a dishwasher.

In one of the kitchens there is a large steel table and all the necessary

appliances to hold a cooking class. Upon request, a friendly chef who speaks

English will teach you the secrets of the Sorrento cuisine and engage you in a

fun task: by the end of the lesson, each of you will try a recipe that you have

learned how to prepare!

On the ground floor, you will also find four separate WCs and a laundry room

with a washing machine.

The sleeping area and…

Ten of the bedrooms at Villa Max are distributed on the first and second floor,

while the eleventh room is found on the attic floor. All floors communicate

through an elevator.

The bedrooms are all independent and distributed along a corridor on each floor.

All bedrooms have a bathroom inside. In eight of the rooms you will have a

bathroom equipped with a Jacuzzi bathtub and shower, whereas in the other three

remaining bedrooms you will find a bathroom equipped with a Jacuzzi shower.

The bedrooms are quite spacious and boast high vaulted ceilings. All rooms have

access to a balcony or a private terrace furnished with a table and chairs. All

bedrooms overlook the garden and the sea.

In four bedrooms you will find a small area which communicates with the bedroom

itself furnished with a double divan bed. Each bedroom dispose of a TV, a

mini-fridge, a phone, a safe.

All the bedrooms feature elegant and refined furnishings with antique furniture

and handmade terracotta floor.

…the master bedroom

The largest and most romantic bedroom is isolated from all the others and is

found in the attic.

It is a spacious room divided in two areas by a masonry partition. In one angle

you will find a bed and a large bathroom, where both the bathtub and shower are

Jacuzzi. The rest of the room is a large living area with a table, chairs, and a

divan.

Furnishings are elegant and refined. A large golden chandelier hangs from the

vaulted ceiling, and the floor in terracotta hand-painted in blue are still the

authentic ones dating from the nineteenth century; those where Max and his sweet

Enrichetta once stood on …

From the living area of this room, a patio door will enable you to step outside

onto the terrace, which is exclusively connected to this room.

It is a very spacious terrace where you will have an endless view of the sea and

the coast. Half of it is shaded by a large wrought-iron gazebo. You will have

sun loungers to sunbathe, and under the gazebo, you will find a table, chairs,

and small wicker couches. While sitting outside, you will be before a panorama

of sea and sky of incomparable beauty.

The belvedere terrace

An outdoor staircase will allow you to climb up to the belvedere of the villa,

which is the highest terrace, placed right above the attic room. From this

terrace your eyes will meet a 360º panorama which goes from the Gulf of Salerno

to the south, Capri and the Gulf of Naples to the north, and the hills of

Sorrento. It is a unique spectacle impossible to be forgotten.

The garden

Around Villa Max you will find a large garden which is well cared for and rich

in flowers. You can reach it from several patio doors in the living-room,

dining-room, and kitchen.

In the garden you will find areas shaded by large pine trees and sun-drenched

lawns. Next to the living-room there is a large pergola under which you will

have tables and chairs which are perfect for outdoor meals. You will also have a

barbecue and an outdoor kitchen at your disposal.

Part of the garden is used as a helicopter landing area. And in another part you

will see a tennis court. The tennis court is available to you free of charge. In

the garden you will find and also enjoy a unique and unusual decoration: some

antique and classic cars.

The swimming-pool

The swimming-pool with Jacuzzi is placed on a sun-drenched area of the garden,

and it is surrounded by a green lawn. While lying on the sun loungers in the

shade of the big umbrellas, you will be able to enjoy the view of the sea and

the Vesuvius.

The swimming-pool is 12 x 8 meters (about 39 x 26 feet) large. It is available

from the first of March up to the 30th of Novembre.

Services

At Villa Max you will have breakfast and a daily 4-hour cleaning service

included in the rental price.

It is possible to have a chef and organize simple or formal ceremonial dinners

as well as cooking lessons upon request.

restaurant.

You can book excursions both by bus or boat and even book a helicopter ride.

You can also rent the beautiful red spider, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, an old

automobile of the villa, if you feel like going for a ride along the coast

feeling the wind rushing through your hair, just like the divas of the Dolce

Vita in the Sixties!

The Campania region

If you think you have no idea of where Campania is, think again. This fascinating land, rich in gulfs, islands and legendary places, is home to the charming landscapes of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, the Cilento National Park, Capri and Ischia.

The Campania region is situated in the South of Italy and bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea (that’s the name of that stretch of Mediterranean). The region is divided into five provinces, whose capitals are Salerno, Caserta, Avellino, Benevento and Naples (Napoli). Naples is also the capital city of the region itself. With roughly 6 million of residents, half of which lives around the city of Naples, Campania has more people than Finland, packed in an area which is 200 times smaller.

If you are fond of archeology, architecture, or simply want to see history come back to life, Campania is a must. The archeological heritage is huge: the temples left by the Greeks in Paestum, the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the remains of Velia, the masterpieces kept in the museums, the churches… and, of course!, the Royal Palace of Caserta, built to be the most sumptuous palace of Europe, with its 1200 rooms.

If the majesty you prefer is the majesty of nature, Campania will not disappoint you. The sandy beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Cilento National Park, the amazing scenery of the Amalfi Coast, the islands of the Gulf of Naples are just a sampler of what lies ahead of you. From the underground depths of the caves of Pertosa to the heights of Mount Vesuvius, there is something for everyone. By the way, being Mount Vesuvius an active volcano, we respectfully suggest you visit sooner rather than later.

An outline of Campania would not be complete without a mention of its culinary tradition. Many of the world-known Italian dishes have their roots in Campania: pizza, spaghetti, mozzarella, limoncello, cannelloni… Italians know Campania well for being one of the regions that offer the best food, and definitely the region where you can taste the best coffee. Espresso, cappuccino and now interesting variations on the theme such as hazelnut coffee make the day of the residents of Campania, and will make yours as well.

Massa Lubrense

Massa Lubrense is popularly known as the legendary Land of Sirens (from which it derives the toponym of “Sirenusion”), who lived along the coast and with their haunting and beautiful voices lured sailors onto the rocks. According to the legend, Ulysses passed for Ieranto Bay, and there he built the temple of the goddess Athena. Ieranto Bay or Baia di Ieranto, in Massa Lubrense, is one of the rare Italian place inhabited from the very ancient times, and the only intact creek of the Amalfi Coast.

Beyond the legend, the presumed aborigines of the area were two: Ausons and Osci, of which, a while ago, it was found an inscription nearby the eastern shore of Punta Campanella.

Its name derives from the Longobard word "mansa", which defined a territorial unit, with the adjective "lubrense" related to the Church of Madonna della Lobra, so named because it was built upon a pre-existing pagan temple (delubrum, in Latin).

Massa Lubrense is the climatic centre of the Sorrento Peninsula. It has a triangular form and borders at north-east with Sorrento, Gulf of Salerno on the left and Gulf of Naples on the right. The gulfs are separated by the peak of Punta Campanella (historically called “Athenaeum promontory”) that faces the island of Capri. This gorgeous strip offers fantastic occasions for excursions both overland and underwater.

In 1990, 11 pedestrian routes were found, miles away from noise, chaos, urban agglomerates, through lemon and olive trees. The classical walk is a triangle with its points in Termini, Monte San Costanzo and Punta Campanella. Depending on the weather, the temperature and other factors you can do the walk in one direction or the other; whichever way it is a just spectacular!
