The Gran Canaria region

The island was populated by the Canarii (Guanches), who may have arrived as early as 500 BC. The Canarii called the island Tamarán. After over a century of european (French, Portuguese...) incursions and attempts at conquest, the island was conquered in 1483 April 29, for the Kingdom of Castile, with the support of Queen Isabella I - it was very important step in the expansion of Spain.

The capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded on June 24, 1478, with the name "Real de Las Palmas", by Juan Rejón, head of the invading Castilian army. In 1492, Cristopher Columbus anchored in the Port of Las Palmas (and spent some time on the island) on his first trip to the Americas.
Gran Canaria has highways encircling the whole island and extending into the mountain areas. In the late 20th century, its superhighways, among the first in the Canary Islands, were opened and ran around Las Palmas, and were later extended to the north coast and the airport and subsequently to the south coast to account for increased tourist traffic. The superhighways are GC1, GC2, and GC31, and dual carriageways GC4 and GC5. The western and the northwestern parts, with the fewest tourists, are linked only with highways.

The International Airport of Gran Canaria-Gando is the only airport on Gran Canaria. It has so many aircraft and passengers passing through it each year that it is placed as one of the busiest in Spain. Gran Canaria also hosts the responsibility of controlling all air traffic of The Canaries.

Gran Canaria's average daytime highs range from 20 °C in winter, to 26 °C in summer. Some cool nights occur in winter, but lows below 10 °C are unknown near the coast. Inland the climate is still mild but mountains areas see the occasional frost or snow. Hot southeasterly winds from the Sahara can push temperatures above 38 °C (100 °F) on rare occasions, but these conditions don't normally last long. Annual rainfall averages 228 mm, most of this falling in the cooler months, with July, August and September normally rainless. Rainfall is unevenly distributed through the island with some areas being much drier than others. Cloud cover and sunshine is often quite variable during the cooler months, and in fact there can be several rather cloudy days at times in winter. Summers are generally quite sunny however, with the south of the island being most favoured.
This island is called a "Miniature Continent" due to the different climates and variety of landscapes found, with its long golden beaches and endless dunes of white sand, its green ravines and picturesque villages.[5] A third of the island is under protection as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

The number of annual visitors is 2.2 million (2,200,000). Most of the tourists visit the southern part of the island.

The north tends to be cooler while the south is warmer and sunny. The east coast of the island is flat dotted with beaches while the western coast is rockier and mountainous.

The island possesses 32[6] Natural Protected Spaces, that they emphasize the Rural Park of Nublo, Doramas' Jungle, the Ravine of Azuaje, Tamadaba, Pino Santo, etc.

Most tourists stay in the south of the island, which is sunnier and has less rain than the north. However, just below the airport in the town of Vecindario there is a large shopping centre "Commercial Atlantico" that includes a Carrefour and shopping mall. Vecindario is the town where the "locals" live. In the south there is a large bird park, Palmitos Park, in the south of the island as well as many beach resort communities. The resort communities start in the central eastern part of the southern coast in the Maspalomas area which includes the towns of San Agustín, Playa del Inglés, Sonnenland, Maspalomas and Meloneras. The Dunes of Maspalomas are located between Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas. Another tourist attraction is the lighthouse at Maspalomas situated at the western end of Maspalomas.

Maspalomas / Salobre Golf Resort area

Maspalomas
Some consider it the most beautiful of all the fantastic beaches of the island. And we understand why. Fine white sand backed by vast, wind-sculpted dunes, set against the blue sea, waits for you all year round. The amazing natural beauty comes at a price, however, as this area is often crowded, especially where the sun beds are located.

You'll find this beach divided into four areas: the first perfect for families and kids, the second and the fourth nudist zones and the third for the gay community.

Like Playa del Inglés, this beach also provides everything you’d look for to enjoy a fabulous day at the beach inclusive of all sports and leisure facilities you can imagine as well as lots of beach bars, restaurants and shops.

But that’s not all. There’s so much more entertainment and fun to be found in the nearby surroundings or just a few kilometres north of Maspalomas with attractions such as Aqualand Maspalomas (the biggest water park on the island), Holiday World (an extensive amusement park with a Ferris wheel), Palmitos Park (an ornithological park with aquarium, butterfly house and orchids), Sioux City (a Wild West theme park), and the fascinating Mundo Aborigen (“a place of cultural, social and historical interest”, according to the Canarian government).

Maspalomas beach is a true paradise for all beach and fun lovers, for families with children as well as for sun worshippers, especially if you want to get away from the cold north European winter!
When Mackenzie Ross came to designing this course, he took into the account the surrounding dunes. As a result, Maspalomas Golf offers an extremely long and flat course with lengthy, wide lanes. Even on the hottest days, the proximity of the sea and the mild breezes cooled by the trade winds, make a visit to this course an unforgettable experience.

This 18-hole, par-73 course plays host to a number of prestigious international competitions, and boasts a practice green, driving range, instructors, facilities for the hire of carts, bags and clubs, shop, restaurant and snack bars.

You’ll find Salobre Golf, one of the newest golf clubs in Gran Canaria, set in a magnificent scenery with ravines and volcanic landscapes typical of the south of the island. Indeed, the lush greenery of the course forms a strong contrast to its surroundings.

Designed by Roland Fauré, the interesting and demanding par-71, 18-hole Salobre Sur course covers a length of 6 km. The trickier Salobre Norte, also known as the Beast Course and designed by Ron Kirby, likewise features 18 holes but is par-72. This complex’s facilities include a golf school, practice area, driving range, putting green, club hire, hydro-massage, pro-shop and restaurant with terrace.

Camel Safari in Gran Canaria
No, this isn’t a wind-up and yes, you’re still visiting the Gran Canaria guide. And there are camel excursions available here.
The famous Sahara-like sand dunes of Maspalomas, forming part of a nature reserve, are – for example – one of the places on Gran Canaria, which can be explored by foot or… on the back of an exotic dromedary.

The shopping centres of Playa del Inglés – of which the best known are probably Yumbo and Kasbah, but the biggest is Cita – stay busy seven days a week, but the emphasis here is on price rather than quality. These shopping centres are usually huge buildings, where you can find almost everything – clothes, electronic goods, jewellery, perfumes as well as lots of animated bars, restaurants and clubs. The supermarkets all along the south coast also sell a wide range of local and imported food and drink.
