The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
Situated in Lower Wensleydale the Gateway to the Dales, providing an excellent base to explore the Dales including Nidderdale and Swaledale. The coasts of Whitby, Scarborough and Filey are within easy reach travelling over the North Yorkshire Moors. Why not take a train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby.
The spa town of Harrogate and York with it's Minster and museums are both within an hour's drive.
Ripon boasts a beautiful cathedral and a lively race course and is 20 minutes away by car.
Middleham, again 20 minutes away, has a great castle and is fabulous for watching the race horses training daily on the gallops.
For the children, try the Wensleydale Steam Railway and also the Big Sheep, Little Cow at Bedale.
The Masham / Healey area
Masham holds several events throughout the year - the most popular being the Steam Engine and Fair Organ rally in July, the Sheep Fair in September and the Victorian Fair in December. Bi-annually there is an Arts Festival lasting for just over a week with plenty of workshops and events to participate in.
Masham boasts two famous breweries - Black Sheep and Theakstons - both have excellent visitor centres and tours.
Markets are held twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday and there are craft fairs in the Town Hall on a regular basis. Arts and crafts are still very popular with beautiful gallery shops within the town.
There are plenty of welcoming pubs, restaurants and tea rooms - you will be spoilt for choice.
For the children there is Lightwater Valley theme park, The Forbidden Corner and Brymor Ice Cream parlour (to name but a few) all within a close proximity.
A visit to Jervaulx Abbey and Fountains Abbey is a must. Newby Hall, Ripley Castle and Kiplin Hall are historic properties are also well worth a visit.
Walking is a popular pastime in the area taking in the beautiful countryside. Don't miss Hackfall Woods at Grewelthorpe, a site of special scientific interest.
Don't forget to call in to the Tourist Information in Mashamshire Community Office to pick up attraction and walk leaflets.
