Ripon boasts a beautiful cathedral and a lively race course and is 20 minutes away by car.
Middleham, again 20 minutes away, has a great castle and is fabulous for watching the race horses training daily on the gallops.
For the children, try the Wensleydale Steam Railway and also the Big Sheep, Little Cow at Bedale.

Bi-annually there is an Arts Festival lasting for just over a week with plenty of workshops and events to participate in.
Masham boasts two famous breweries - Black Sheep and Theakstons - both have excellent visitor centres and tours.
Markets are held twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday and there are craft fairs in the Town Hall on a regular basis. Arts and crafts are still very popular with beautiful gallery shops within the town.
There are plenty of welcoming pubs, restaurants and tea rooms - you will be spoilt for choice.
For the children there is Lightwater Valley theme park, The Forbidden Corner and Brymor Ice Cream parlour (to name but a few) all within a close proximity.
A visit to Jervaulx Abbey and Fountains Abbey is a must. Newby Hall, Ripley Castle and Kiplin Hall are historic properties are also well worth a visit.

"Beautiful barn conversion & grounds but needs better management"
We shortlisted 3 different cottages that could cater for our group of 2 adults, 4 children and pet dog in Yorkshire. Reading on their website that The Barn was 5* and hearing from one of the agencies … More
We are sorry that the welcome did not meet your expectations. It was a difficult time for us and the fact that my father had just passed away may have contributed. I'm glad you enjoyed the grounds - they are my pride and joy. The courtyard herb and rose garden is not really designed for children - they have several acres of open fields in which to play. Healey Mill lies in a fairly remote, peaceful and tranquil location. We appreciate the need for modern communications but weak signals are a fact of rural life. WiFi is available in the lounge and a mobile phone signal can be obtained within 200 metres. Testimonials received from visitors over the last couple of years have been positive and encouraging, but we will give careful consideration to the points raised in this review.
