The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
From heather-clad moors and bold limestone scars, to lively market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer? Surely, nowhere as much as in the Yorkshire Dales?
Both a National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the region’s stunning scenery includes rolling hay meadows, striking limestone formations, grand heather-laden moors and picture-postcard perfect villages. A paradise for walkers, the Yorkshire Dales attract enthusiasts from far and wide as the long distance Pennine Way and Coast-to-Coast routes pass through the area. Cycling through the Dales is also popular – keen cyclists will enjoy the varied scenery and occasional ‘hilly’ sections of the 130 miles of Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, as it winds its way through Swaledale, Wensleydale and Coverdale. All of this, as well as exploring the imposing rock formations, echoing caves and potholes, will satisfy the most adventurous spirit, whilst Semer Water, the largest natural lake in Yorkshire, will keep any water-sport enthusiast happy. If you’re looking for more relaxing pursuits, there’s much more to see than magnificent scenery. Stone-built villages nestling in valley bottoms, picturesque towns with vibrant craft centres and markets, imposing castles, stunning gardens and fine architecture are all part of the Dales’ appeal.
Grassington, Wharfedale’s main town, boasts beautiful cobbled streets and quaint shops that take the visitor on a journey back in time, whilst the lively town of Hawes is home to the award winning Dales Countryside Museum, a fascinating range of shops and craft galleries and a sample or two of the famous ‘Wensleydale’ cheese at the Creamery is a treat not to be missed!
The Masham area
Situated in the lower reaches of Wensleydale, the historic market town of Masham is located alongside the River Ure. Set in gently rolling farmland, the town boasts a huge market square – home to both a Wednesday and Saturday market. The local area provides numerous walking opportunities, including a recently reopened 10-mile trail along the Ure, arguably one of the best walks in the country. The town boasts a good range of crafts, galleries, shops, restaurants and pubs as well as the Black Sheep Brewery, which now produces 11 million pints of beer a year. The popular towns of Ripon and Harrogate are an easy drive away and offer multiple services and activities for visitors.
