The Cumbria/Lake District

There is so much to see in the stunning area of Cumbria and the Lake District there just aren't enough hours in the day! Spectacular scenery, lakes, mountains including the highest mountain in England: Scafell Pike, and a wonderful coastline, glorious in the summer and dramatic in the winter, this area makes a perfect year round retreat.

You can enjoy a relaxed stroll around the picturesque villages or Buttermere Lake. Climb or walk up mountains, including all Wainwrights. Immerse yourself in history by exploring the areas castles, stately Homes and museums. The young and the adventurous can let off steam with the huge variety of outdoor activities on offer, from gill scrambling, canoeing to horse riding. Or the more extreme sports of kitesurfing, there is something to suit all interests.

If you're feeling hungry, the region contains some first class eateries, from traditional tea shops to fine dining. Keswick and Cockermouth both boast a wealth of restaurants to suit every palette with ingredients sourced from local producers. Local fish dishes and Herdwick Lamb a specialty!

Maryport

This charming coastal town boasts a fine deep water harbour with modern marina, a thriving shopping centre, weekly local market selling homemade produce, a golf course, beautiful Georgian houses, the award-winning Lake District Coast Aquarium and the exciting tourist attraction Clip and Climb. Famous for being the birth place of 'Mutiny on the Bounty' author Fletcher Christian. For history fans, the Maritime Museum and Senhouse Roman Museum and excavations are both worth a look . The stunning coastline provides many picturesque walking opportunities (including the Cumbria Coastal Walk) and the potential for some excellent bird watching. Maryport has a wealth of restaurants, pubs and cafes, with most serving locally sourced produce. Maryport hosts two festivals annually, The Harbour Festival and The Blues Festival. Beautifully situated, Maryport is within only a short drive of attractions such as William Wordsworth's Georgian family home (now owned by the National Trust) in Cockermouth, the beautiful northern lakes area and some stunning walks around around Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water, Buttermere, Loweswater and Derwent Water.
