Home description
The Trulli dell'Allegria is in the unique pugliese countryside, just 6 kilometers from Martina Franca. It is composed of ten trulli and three lamie. The trulli are like tiny castles with pointed cone rooftops; they originally provided living accommodation for farming families whilst the lamie were used to house animals or the process of wine production.
'Trulli dell'Allegria', means ' Trulli of Good Cheer'. The last resident descendants of the original builders were a working family of eleven. The eldest brother played and taught traditional music to the local children. The trulli were therefore ever full of music and dancing. I am glad to say that the tradition continues.
The trulli bedrooms are lime-washed and augmented by local art and craftsmanship. Bedding is top quality and locally handmade. One trullo has a double bed, separate toilet and bathroom, the other has twin singles or double bed, en suite toilet and shower room.
The larger, self-catering lamia is furnished with a small double sofa-bed. A camp bed is also available if required. Coffee making facilities, pasta, local olive oil and the usual condiments would be provided.
Have you ever wanted to sing in a good choir? Available 'workshops' could include learning to sing from notation at sight; it's an excellent opportunity for children to learn, too. Returning home with a great new skill plus your own performance of a few traditional songs must surely be a rare and original souvenir! (Guests are invited, if they wish, to enjoy the library of songs of every kind - including lots for kids - for free.)
Also available on demand is the opportunity to study the basics of Astrology through your own birth chart. (Send or bring with you your time, place, date of birth.)
Trulli dell'Allegria... Welcome!

The Puglia/Molise region
Over the centuries millions of traders and invaders have arrived in Puglia from every direction; the history of the land and its surrounding seas is therefore very rich and truly fascinating.
Puglia is big. Its central area is a veritable cornucopia of treasure. With my personal favourite exception of a day's outing to Otranto in the south, I am intentionally confining my information to it.
Martina Franca is the hub at the centre of the Valle d'Itria. Spokes go out to each of the beautiful white market towns of nearby Locorotondo, Cisternino, Ceglie, Ostuni - and to Alberobello, the deservedly famous 'trulli capital'; which is best seen out of tourist opening times! 'Trulli' are unique single-storey stone dwellings with conical roofs to be found thickly scattered throughout that small part of the Pugliese countryside known as the Valle d'Itria. The Trulli and the lamie (built to house animals alongside) have been excavated and constructed from the cream coloured rocks which still lie scattered in abundance in the surrounding rich red earth. Diligently crafted dry stone walls surround groves of centuries-old olive trees, vineyards, flourishing vegetable gardens and orchards throughout all of Puglia.
Delights further afield include the baroque city of Lecce, the rich museums of Taranto (pronounced. TA-r'nto, by the way & most definitely not like T'rOntoh!) and Bari and the breathtaking stalagmite and stalactite grottos at Castellana. Whilst evidences of ancient Greek and Roman life abound, a visit to Otranto's world famous mosaic Tree of Life is a great day's outing through miles of surprisingly Byzantine-inspired coastal towns.
For a more relaxing day, miles of sandy beaches can be enjoyed and dark, mysterious caves explored by boat along the Adriatic, Ionian and Terreno coasts. End such a day by spending your evening in a delightful little town such as Polignano-al-Mare. Share the traditional evening 'passeggiata' with local families as they stroll together through the old town or the main piazzas. Relish the sound - unaccompanied by traffic noises - of footsteps and people chatting, then enjoy a simple, perfectly prepared fish supper at one of the many little restaurants ... Throughout the entire region, local wines are superb, whilst the fruit, vegetables, fish and olive oil are unsurpassed in the whole of Italy.
Festivals are held throughout the year, you may discover a masseria, or old farm house which is holding a traditional dance and music evening, or stumble on a marching band at the head of an impressively long saint's day procession.. Away from people, along country lanes and in the woods, according to the season, look for wild orchids and butterflies. Take your camera wherever you go! (Perhaps, these days, whever you choose to spend your holiday, you might also be advised to bring along a jumper and a mac.)
Martina Franca area
MARTINA FRANCA is the beautiful cream stone baroque town and cultural centre of this uniquely integrated landscape. During the last half of July and first week of August, the classical Music Festival is held in here. This year, in the open air, surrounded by the splendidly restored Comune building, it is presenting Gluck's 'Orfeo and Euridice', & 'Iphigenie auf Tauris', and Cagnoni's 'Il Re Lear' , as well as celebrating the bicentenary of Haydn's death with 'The Creation' and two symphonic concerts. (Sorry not to give you more notice!)
Festivals, fairs, dance and traditional music take place locally throughout the year. Consult the Tourist Office, which is also to be found in the Comune; specifically in the library, or 'Biblioteca'. (Perhaps you should know that 'libreria' means 'bookshop' and no, it doesn't lend books!)
How to get there
Best to take Ryanair to BRINDISI (pron. BRIN-dizzy, by the way). It operates fewer flights but is nearer and more pleasant to use than the airport at BARI.
CARS can be hired from either airport at the time of booking. .
My house is very easy to find; it's in the Valle d'Itria, lying between MARTINA FRANCA and CEGLIE. I will give exact directions when booking is confirmed.

STARS and PLANETS Light and weather conditions permitting, millions of stars are visible alongside our solar system on the edge of the Milky Way. Swinging slowly over the sky over the year the entire Ecliptic (or zodiacal cycle) can be observed, together with planets which happen to be visible during their apparent nocturnal journey around the Earth.
(In fact, there is a superb computerised telescope here. If a genuinely computer-literate guest can help set it up, it will give to many more people a rare and wonderful opportunity to enjoy sky gazing in depth...)
Further details
The house has been restored with a positive regard to ecological factors. Guests are invited to share the environmentally friendly outlook.
POWER Basic electricity is provided (via photovoltaic panels) by the sun. Please remember to switch off when not in use.
WATER Tap water is NOT potable. It is harvested from the roof and collected in the rock cavern below the piano. The supply is augmented as necessary by delivery. Guests are asked to use it sparingly. Toilets have a half-flush mode, which I will explain. 2 litres of drinking water will be supplied daily to each room.
The piano and the organ are precious and guests are respectfully asked not to put drinks on them or let young children play them unsupervised.
DOGS! I don't actually own any dogs - but I seem to have been occasionally (according to season) adopted by two; a female German shepherd, having a 'jolly' temperament, but sensitive and with impeccable manners; she has an offical owner, who feeds her. There's a white male too, whose origin is traditionally uncertain; he's fed by a neighbour. I DO NOT FEED EITHER of them and very seriously request that guests do not feed them either. (A neighbour's delightful English collie and her small German shepherd daughter also come and visit from time to time. There's lots of space and they seem to understand 'shoo' ok!)

Guestbook for Trulli dell'Allegria
Dear Jill, just a short note to thank you for the wonderful stay at your B&B, and to let you know what an extraordinary treat it was for us. Your trullo is absolutely beautiful, as is the surrounding biblical landscape. The handmade mattress was an experience to savour, as were the breakfasts shared, and we hope you'll have room for us on our next visit to Puglia, hopefully before Xmas, kind regards, Robyn, Andrew, and Gervais ( Australia, via Procida )
