The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia is an enchanting region, with its white washed mystical Trullo buildings, its stunning rolling hills, sandy beaches, ancient olive groves and vineyards. Its dramatic and varied natural beauty includes some of Italy's most spectacular coastline including the Gargano region and the Tremiti islands. It has a Mediterranean climate with long hot summers and cooler winter months.
Puglia is a food and wine lover’s paradise. One reason is that the fresh produce is of such high quality. Indeed, many of the basic elements of the Italian kitchen originate from Puglia, including tomatoes, olives, eggplants, artichokes, almonds and citrus fruit.
Other nearby places of interest include, Alberobello (a UNESCO site), tourists come to Alberobello from all over the world to see its unique urban landscape. The town has become famous internationally because of its "Trulli", cone shaped houses constructed in stone blocks known as chiancole. The nearby pretty hilltop destination of Locorotondo is famous for its white wines and gastronomic fairs. Ostuni is one of the most well-known of the 'white' hilltop towns in Puglia and Lecce 'The Florence of Baroque' is also well worth a visit.
Only a 40 minute drive from the villa are the Grottos of Castellana, a vast system of natural underground caves which are the most important tourist attraction in Puglia, as well as one of the most famous in the whole of southern Italy. The Grottos of Castellana represent one of the most important series of natural underground caves in Italy and Europe, a reputation gained not only because of their size but above all for the spectacular natural galleries and the wealth of crystalline concretions. Guided tours are available and a lift for disabled access.
The people of Puglia are very friendly and hospitable, even if your Italian may not be up to speed most Italians will have a go at speaking English and you will be made to feel very welcome.
Martina Franca area
Martina Franca is most famous for its elegant Baroque buildings. The architecture of the historic part of town is charming with small white houses, narrow lanes, wrought iron balconies covered in flowers. There is a wealth of Palazzi Churches and monuments including the gateway Porta di St. Antonio, the Arch of St Stefano, Palazzo Ducale, the Collegiata of St Martino and the Palazzo of the University of Martina Franca.
The town also offers numerous amenities including a smart shopping area with small boutique shops and international brands, cafes, bars and restaurants and a local street market.
Martina Franca is the base for the annual Festival della Valle d'Itria, a summer opera festival. Operas and classical music concerts are performed in venues around the town including the Palazzo Ducale and the Basilica di San Martino. The event takes place from mid July to mid August.
Other local attractions include the resort of Capitolo with its fine sandy beaches and 'Lidi' (organised beach resorts, hotels, bars and restaurants) is only a 20 minute drive away from the Trullo. The stunning cliffside town of Polignano a Mare is also only 30 minutes away and offers views of the crystal blue sea below and little coves from its characteristic clifftop walk. There are also many good fish restaurants spanning this length of coast.
A 10 minute drive from the Trullo takes you to Fasano where there is a Zoo Safari and amusement park including dolphin and seal shows and fair rides ideal for families with children. Fasano is also famous for its woodland, ideal for walking or bike and horse riding.
The agricultural town of Grottaglie is famous for its traditional ceramics where many artists sell their pottery in the local shops. There is also an 18 hole golf course nearby in Savelletri which offers an unforgettable experience for visitors and a superb view of the Adriatic Sea.
