The Puglia region

The virtually undiscovered region is rural with historic towns perched on the top of the many hills, painted white to reflect the glistening sun. Puglia is Italy’s largest olive oil producing region with olive trees in every garden it is easy to see why.

Every town has a market day selling locally produced goods from fresh fruit and veg, to clothes and shoes, a bargain to be found by all.

The sun in July and August can be very strong, but with the weather being pleasant from May through to October there is plenty of time to explore this beautiful region.

Martina Franca

The beautiful town of Martina Franca with its historic centre has an abundance for Bars and Restaurants to choose from. Sit in the large main piazza and watch the local Italians go about their daily routine.

Close by Alberobello is a town made up with over a thousand “trulli”, a small cylindrical building that peasants built hundreds of years ago to avoid paying taxes, now a popular tourist attraction.

"The best of Puglia"

We choose this property to spend 5 nights over the Christmas holidays with my parents. The spaces are ideal for 2 adult couples (although one of the bedrooms has separate single beds) because the bedrooms are at opposite sides of the living space and each has its own bathroom, providing just the right amount of privacy - something hard to find in a trullo rental! Daniel, the owner, met us at a convenient location in the town of Martina Franca and accompanied us by car to the property, to let us in and show us how everything worked. He was extremely generous with his time: he personally accompanied us more than once to places he recommended in town, including a butcher, supermarket, and restaurant! We were also greeted with a bottle of local wine, bottled water, and local fresh oranges that were so good, I asked to order more - and he insisted on giving them to us as a gift, for which we thank him deeply! Staying in a trullo is a unique experience. It's certainly something to do in one's lifetime, and the most characteristic type of accommodation possible in this area of Italy. This trullo has been very respectfully restored, with attractive light coloured flooring, original whitewashed or stone walls, and radiant floor heating to avoid taking up space and spoiling the aesthetics with ugly wall radiators. Trulli keep naturally cool in the summertime, and this place would be wonderful to experience in fact in the summer, as we'd have loved to try out the pool and outside dining area. In the winter, our only "complaint" is that it can be quite cold and a bit damp; Daniel however did his best to keep us warm, turning on the heat days before our arrival, encouraging us to keep it on high the whole time despite the gas cost, and he also provided us with a large space heater for the coldest room. Martina Franca is known for having cooler weather than the towns near the coast, as it is at about 500 meters above sea level, so it's a desirable location in the summertime, and understandably a bit cold in the winter :) As for the location, it really is excellent. Once you get the hang of the small roads in the area, it's just a few minutes into town, where on the outskirts there is a large supermarket, and in the historic center there are good bars and restaurants (not to mention that it's generally charming). The trullo is well located to visit surrounding towns like Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, Fasano (for the zoo safari), the grotte di Castellana, Taranto, and even further afield like Lecce and Matera.
