Home description
This stylish trullo, sleeping 4-6, is set in the countryside just 3km south of beautiful baroque Martina Franca and is just half an hours drive from either coast. The property is made up of a traditional trullo and a newly built lamia. The trullo’s thick walls keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter; and always cosy and inviting in the evenings with its beautiful arches and lovely little alcoves. It has been lovingly restored, including unique mosaics inspired by churches in the local vicinity.
The adjoining lamia, with it’s traditional curved ceilings, comprises of two double bedrooms, (one of which can be made in to two singles); a stunning and spacious bathroom and a utility room. Each of the bedrooms and the utility room have oak french doors which open onto a large terrace. With gorgeous views of classic Puglian countryside and its many olive trees, wild flowers and rich sienna-coloured soil, the sun-loungers and a parasol make it the perfect place to relax, and lanterns are provided for candlelit al fresco dining.
Recently renovated 'Trullo degli Uccelli'.
Mosaic splashback made by the owner, inspired by mosaics in a local church.
The romantic dining alcove by candlelight.
Reverse view of the cosy trullo interior, showing romantic dining alcove and wood burning stove.

The Puglia/Molise region
Our property is set in the heart of magical Puglian coutryside, just 3km south of Martina Franca with its stunning white stone baroque buildings and its famous music and theatre festivals. There are also pretty hill villages in each direction approx 10 kms away with weekly markets and delicious local restaurants with genuinely friendly hosts. Martina Franca has a large public swimming pool. Villages nearby include:
- Alberobello - the most famous “trulli” area in the world - Locorotondo and Cisternino, famous for the D.O.C. Locorotondo wines and grilled meat served in traditional restaurants - Castellana Grotte, famous for its astonishing caverns - Fasano, Torre Canne and Savelletri - sea, archaeological and tourist attractions - Grottaglie and its famous ceramic quarter - Lecce - also known as the 'Florence of the South'.
Martina Franca area
Trullo degli Uccelli is a calm comfortable haven to relax in and a great base to explore the surrounding area for an unforgettable holiday.
Stunning sandy beaches on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts are only 30 minutes away and the high proportion of surrounding rock means the sea is beautifully clean. Other interesting sites nearby include wonderful caves, castles, old forts and numerous lovely local towns including:
Martina Franca - a stunning and elegant baroque town with a cathedral, churches, large public swimming pool, excellent shopping and restaurants. Alberobello is an extraordinary town made up a hundreds of beautiful Trulli - a UNESCO world heritage site it. Locorotondo is famous for its wine as well as being a beautiful town with fabulous views across the Itria Valley. Ostuni 'the white city' is a pre-roman town built on three hills. The beautiful old town centre is made up of steep medieval alleys and is circled by ramparts and many hours can be enjoyed just exploring these gleaming white streets. The cathedral, in the heart of the old quarter has one of the most beautiful facades in Puglia. Cisternino is a maze of pedestrianised whitewashed buildings bedecked with geraniums and potted ferns. The town is awash with simple family run trattorie and cafes. Ceglie another tYpically beautiful town. Grottaglie - many areas of Puglia are renowned for their production of ceramics but the heartland must be the town of Grottaglie, with an entire artistic quarter dedicated to the production of traditional local pottery. If you are lucky you may be offered a tour of some of the workshops. Fasano, Torre Canne and Savelletri are near to the sea, with tourist attractions and archaeological sites galore. Matera - a little further afield is Matera, home to the sassi, a fantastic version of a human anthill, an entire city of cave-houses dug out of soft tufa, rising out of an ancient river channel. Mel Gibson used some locations here when filming "The Passion of The Christ." Grotte di Castellana's grottoes are an unmissable sight in any visit to Puglia. Offering breathtaking views of stalactites and stalagmites as well as glistening crystallite. Lecce - the beauty of Lecce, capital of the Salento region, often inspires gushing comparisons with better known cities, most typically 'the Florence of the South'. Whilst such terms are certainly complimentary, they don't offer any real sense of this unique Baroque gem lighting up the heel of the country. Unmissable.
The Valle d’Itria has always produced superb wines: the Verdeca and the Bianco d'Alessano, the famous DOC white wine " Il Locorotondo" and "Martina Franca", wonderful sparkling wines as well as many red wines including Primitivo and Negroamaro, at their best from the region of Manduria where tours and tasting are available. There are plenty of quality wine cellars closer to Martina Franca - "Cantine Tenute Girolamo", "Cantina Sociale del Locorotondo", "Cantina Albea" of Alberobello and "Miali" of Martina Franca, where it is possible to taste the best wines, see the equipment and visit beautiful museums dedicated to the wine industry. Moreover, there are wine tasting events all year round in fantastic locations: "Bacco nelle Gnostre" and " Calici di Stelle" in Noci, " Rassegna dei Vini Bianchi di Puglia" and " Festivity of the Novello" in Locorotondo, and the gatherings " Cantine Aperte” , " Vendemmia welcome"; and "Wine & Land" in Savelletri di Fasano.
Puglia is the main olive oil producer in Italy with an estimated 50 million olive trees! 50km north of Martina Franca, in the area around Canosa di Puglia is La Strada dell'Olio, a 150km long designated tourist route that guides visitors to all the oil manufacturers as well as pointing out the restaurants in the area that make the best use of the oil in their cuisine. Near Fasano is the Museo dell'Olio di Oliva, found in an ancient masseria and surrounded by 150 acres of olive groves, the museum explores the machinery and presses used in the production of olive oil.
How to get there
Ryanair operates budget airline services from London Stansted to Bari and Brindisi which are both about an hour away from the property by car. They tend to operate on alternate days and change from morning flights in the winter, to evening flights in the summer. British Airways also flies to Bari from Gatwick. Although there is a branch train line from Bari to Martina Franca it's a little slow so car hire is highly recommended. A selection of car hire companies can be found at the airports both of which have been recently rebuilt. It is also possible to fly to Naples and drive (about 4 hours) or fly to Pescara and drive down the coast. From October 2007 Easyjet flies to Milan Malpensa from Bristol. There are a number of connections to Bari from Milan Malpensa. Its also easy to reach Greece via a Ferry from Brindisi.
