The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia, in south-eastern Italy offers a colourful history, and a breathtaking natural heritage. Learn as you have fun in this sun-drenched heaven held in turn by the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans, the Spaniards, each leaving their vestiges, in monuments and architecture, culture and traditions.

A splendid coast of breathtakingly beautiful sea, staggering rock formations, and soft sandy beaches, edges on to splendid fields of ancient olive trees and vineyards offering delicious wines, and spectacular towns. These include the seaside, white-washed town of Ostuni; funky Alberobello, famous as the Trulli town, and composed of innumerable cone shaped dwellings, now full of delightful shops of craftsmen and artisans; beautiful Baroque Lecce; and the nearby Locorotonda and Martina Franca, where you can hang out in charming piazzas, bordered by seignorial mansions and towering Baroque facades, friendly cafe’s and restaurants, farmers' markets, nearby vineyards and olive groves. Don’t miss the beautiful Black horses at liberty in a nearby estate.

Martina Franca area

Here lies one of the most characteristic towns of the Puglia region. The old town has the greatest tourist appeal, with its fabulous and completely intact baroque buildings. Martina Franca has a unique setting, dominating the Valle d'Itria, known as the Valley of the Trulli with its vineyards, small groups of houses, dry stone walls and open countryside.

The climate adds to the appeal, and, due to its position 400 metres above sea level, a wonderfully mild temperature throughout the summer months is guaranteed. The architecture of the historic part of town is charming with small white houses, narrow lanes, wrought iron balconies covered in flowers, Palazzi and Churches, and monuments including the gateway Porta di St. Antonio, the Arch of St Stefano, Palazzo Ducale, the Collegiate of St Martino and the Palazzo of the University of Martina Franca. –

Do not miss an opportunity to get lost in the small alleys of the ancient town. No worries, in the end you will reach some spots that you may recognize and you will soon become acquainted with the place. Martina has a reputation for nice clothes shopping: the street facing the Stradone (main square with trees) after the church located behind the trees of the Villa Comunale, has plenty of elegant (sometimes expensive) shops for him and her.

Local activities include cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, mountain biking, paragliding, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking; Other Activities: cooking lessons, wine tasting, seasonal concerts.

How to get there

It is east to get to the Masseria . Low-coast airlines , plus Alitalia and others service both Bari or Brindisi, each about 65 Km. away. Served by Easy Jet, Ryan Air, Alitalia, and others. Or drive from Rome , Naples , or Pescara.

Guestbook for Trulli Puglia

From James, UK, Summer 2009: Having been to Puglia several times on our own my wife and I decided to take as many members of our extended family as we could muster to show them what we loved about this part of Italy. Ten of us including mother in law , Auntie , daughter and son in law and toddler grandchild , another daughter, son and son's girlfriend rented the whole Masseria taking all three apartments for a week. It is a very tastefully restored and well furnished farmhouse with a pool and hot tub and acres of peaceful rural space around. We all fitted in very well and enjoyed the facilities. The kitchens in the two downstairs apartments are particularly well appointed and spacious and were used for communal meals. Raffaele the farm manager was ready to help with any queries or problems. Some of Italy's most picturesque small towns are nearby. The food everywhere, whether at a simple agritourist farm or sophisticated town centre restaurant, was excellent and waiters would often bring us all free appetisers or desserts. One of our daughters is vegetarian but had no problems at all (not the case for vegetarians in parts of France or Greece)
We would thoroughly recommend this property either as a whole house for a large group or any of the apartments taken separately - we peeked inside the trulli apartments and they looked equally well furnished and comfortable too.
