The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia is probably one of the easiest regions to find on the map, because it contains the heel of Italy's boot shaped configuration. The region ranks 7th out of 20 regions in both population and land area. Puglia is surrounded by the regions of Basilicata and Campania to the west, the region of Molise to the north, the Adriatic Sea to the east, and the Ionian Sea to the south west. The region is divided into five provinces: Bari, which is the regional capital as well as one of the largest cities located in Southern Italy, Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, and Taranto all of which contain 258 comunes. The region also includes two island groups. North of Gargano you will find the islands of Tremiti and in the Gulf of Taranto are the islands of Cheradi.
The region for the most part is relatively flat and it is an ideal place for cycling. The climate is hot and dry, which is typical of Mediterranean weather. Its fertile land allows the region to produce more wine than any other region in Italy and it is among Italy's main olive oil producers. With nearly three quarters of the region surrounded by water, Puglia is an excellent place for tourist to sunbathe on the beautiful sandy beaches. It also allows Puglia to rank as one of the highest regions in Italy for total fish harvest.
There is much to learn about the region of Puglia. From its vast history to its various traditions and customs this guide will help you uncover all the charm and beauty that this region has to offer.

Martina Franca area

Martina Franca, a pleasant little town on a human dimension, lies among the enchanting scenery of the Valle d'Itria in the highest part of the Murge, 431 metres above sea level, mid-way between the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic. Historically speaking it goes back to the tenth century, but the town presumably arose in 1310, founded by the Prince of Taranto, Philippe I of Anjou. In this perfect symbiosis of different civilisation (Longobard, Byzantine and Angevin), every corner offers memories of a past which is not only history, but also art, folklore and traditions handed town with love. As soon as we enter the old town centre we are enveloped in an unreal, magic atmosphere: the streets, lanes, flights of rough stairs, even the windows take us back to a moment that is far back in time, yet strangely close if we consider how well kept everything is. Pages of history come alive so that the visitor is fascinated by the whole effect, but also by the details, accurately tooled by the local stone-cutters. The search for perfection, but also personal research and originality are the characteristics of an artistic style that is certainly unique: a pure, spontaneous art form that captures in its images the soul and way of life of Martina, its creative capacity and human dimension, where the essential factors are dignity and humility.

Guestbook for Perla d'Itria

2008 holiday in Puglia
FarazP London.
Date Submitted: September 04, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008

Since my last visit in 2007, the property had greatly benefited from the newly-built large swimming pool.
The large newly-built patio was also ideal for al fresco dining and for soaking the best sunshine Puglia had to offer in the long summer days we spent there.
The trulli accommodation inside was unique, it is like staying for 2 weeks in a monumental piece of art rather than staying in a normal holiday villa. The walls are thick and inside the temperature is much cooler end enjoyable than in the hot and sticky outside.
The hospitality was above average, we cannot stop recommending this property and this location if you really enjoy a peaceful break in this unspoilt corner of Italy.
The weather is great, the food is probably the best I have ever tasted and the price for eating out and entertaining the family is a fraction of what I would have paid in Tuscany.

We stayed in this property last year in August. We must admit that Puglia, as a region, did not disappoint us at all and we were actually disappointed not to stay longer than a week in this gem region.
We found a really charming property with a large swimming pool, very hospitable and friendly people and really nice and long uninterrupted sandy beaches. All this without the mass tourism you encounter in the most traditional places and it was a real pleasure to be surrounded by Italians all the time.
We highly recommend this property for its carachter, we had never seen anything like that, with conic ceilings and marvellous stone work throughout. In addition, Puglia proved to be excellent value for money. Even the most celebrated restaurants have very reasonably prices and the quality of the food is just simple above average.
