About this location

The Puglia region

Puglia, between the regions of the Italian peninsula, has a record: the longest sea border (784 km, plus the island 45 km) stretches for 19,347 kilometers square in southern Italy, between Campania and Basilicata to the west, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, the Adriatic Sea to the northeast, Molise to the north-west. Few regions are identified geographically as well as Puglia, described by ancient geographers as a region long and narrow, circumscribed by the sea, separated from the valley of the river Bradano Basilicata and Molise by the course of Fortore. It is remembered for being poor in surface water (so that Horace called SITICOLOSA APULIA) but with abundant underground water, forming caves, sinkholes, large chasms. In the infinite variety of its colors and landscapes live the Romanesque Terra di Bari and Lecce Baroque, the taste of farm work and the city on the sea, the high costs of Castro in Salento and the low and jagged of Brindisi , the lush vegetation and wild Gargano and the strong presence of signs of man intensely urbanized areas, the barren Murgia of Altamura and the pleasant captains, the history of the Byzantine and the Normans, the Swabians and Aragonese or of that of the Viceroyalty of Napoleon, and soon after, that of the Restoration of the Bourbons. The varied composition of ethnic groups and cultures was helped, no doubt, by exposure to the sea in the region, which has been for centuries a major port for the East, the last bastion of the West before crossing the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

Tourism. Tourism activity, favored by the geographical nature and the variety of environments and landscapes, is one of the most dynamic sectors of the regional economy. In summer, a large tourist attraction is exerted by the Tremiti islands and seaside resorts that dot the Gargano promontory, the Salento peninsula, the Murgia coastline, the Gulf of Taranto arches and stacks, small fjords, bays, white beaches and dense pine forests. The findings of the Gargano and the mountains of Daunia host ancient shrines, places of asceticism and hermitage, as Monte Sant'Angelo and San Giovanni Rotondo. The hilly area of â??â??the Murgia, planted with orchards, olive groves and wheat, is dotted with trulli, typical houses in Alberobello that are in place, acting as a cottage in a hotel complex which attracts many tourists. The historical and architectural heritage and protected areas are so many reasons of interest for visitors, to which the region has also renewed folk traditions and culinary specialties of tradition. The adaptation of accommodation to the regulations and the need to provide quality services to visitors have promoted the development of rural tourism: the farms, in the trulli, in houses and in those restored by fishermen from Salento to Daunia, many are companies that combine hospitality practice in the fields, the use of the stables, the sale of genuine products made at home.

Martina Franca

Martina Franca is ideal capital of the Valle d'Itria. Located on the highest slopes of the Apulian Murgia, and is 30 km away from the Ionian Sea to the Adriatic, is the ideal place to spend a holiday free with a choice of a daily goal and a different way to have fun and relax. The territory, in fact, offers a lot: from the farms trulli, caves and the famous Park Pianelle if you wish to spend a day immersed in nature. Martina is in fact very easy to reach Taranto, with its pomp magno - Greeks, or other places in the Valle d'Itria, Locorotondo round the city, and the capital of Alberobello trulli. Are still very near Ostuni, the white city, Fasano with the ancient ruins of Egnatia and the Zoosafari, with Matera Sassi, notes Caves of Castellana and the plain of Metaponto.
