TRULLI VISTA DELLA VIGNA
About the home
Set in the world famous Vale of Itria with its centre at Alberobello,(town of a 1000 trulli and a world heritage site) this 200 year old trullo property is full of character and rustic charm , yet newly renovated into a comfortable holiday home and equipped to a high standard. If you are new to the area you are in for a real treat, as Apulian cuisine is a feast for the senses, and restaurants are everywhere, a mixture of mainland food tradition and tastes of the sea at extremely reasonable prices. At nearby Forcatella you can eat sea urchins and freshly caught fish and squid right on the beach!
Quietly situated, Trulli di Vista della Vigna is 1.5 km from the hamlet of Carpari with its shop, church and school and of course local wine maker! However nightlife, supermarket shopping and anything else you may need in Martina Franca or Cisternino is close at hand. Local markets are within easy reach every day of the week and during summer there are festivals and night markets to delight you, throughout the area. Walking round the historic town centres is always a joy in Apulia, but the old stone tracks near the property are also fun, you get an idea if how life used to be.

Further details indoors:
This 200 year old property consists of two cones of dry stone construction with walls over 5 foot thick in places, original massive stone roofs and an old stone lamia lime rendered on the outside. There is no need for air conditioning as the vaulted ceilings and thick walls ensure that the interior is cool in summer and stays warm in winter. (although in this area winter days can still reach 25 degrees) The accommodation comprises french doors leading from the terrace into a living space with sofa and chairs and a delightful chariot wheel light hung in the centre of the vaulted ceiling. The dining 'alcova' has table, and chairs. The kitchen is well equipped, with a gas hob, electric oven and grill, and other electrical appliances. There is a gas fired boiler for a reliable supply of piping hot water and central heating radiators for winter use as well as a wood burning stove for cold winter evenings.
Leading from the kitchen is a 'tunnel' to the double bedroom(also with folding bed if required) The bedroom has a hanging cupboard, ample drawer space, an open fireplace and french doors to the terrace. Adjacent is the modern shower room.
Further details outdoors:
Outside there is a low walled gravel terrace with paths leading to a garden in front. There is also a shade pergola and garden furniture and, you have the advantage of your own traditional pizza oven which can also be used for barbecues! There is ample gravelled car parking space, and behind the trulli is a well stocked orchard, the fruit of which you are welcome to pick in season (apples, pears , cherries, plums, walnuts, hazlenuts, persimmon, fig and quince.)
You will enjoy sleeping with the windows and doors open on summer nights, being protected by sliding bug screens, so you can hear the occasional clink of sheep bells.
Due to its location in Southern Italy, the sunshine often lasts well into the Autumn and we have even been swimming in the sea ourselves in November in some years!

The Puglia/Molise region

Cutlural cities, limestone caves, glorious beaches, whitewashed towns, perched high on hill tops, above olive groves, picturesque fishing villages, stunning cathedrals and castles, fine sandy beaches surrounded by rocky bays, vine covered slopes and delicious cuisine- This is Apulia!
The fertile red soil, dry stone walls and warm climate give this area a distinctly 'eastern' flavour, where the houses look like pointy hats, and is fondly referred to by those who know it, as 'trullishire'.
Far from being dry and arid this narrow penninsular grows some of the best produce in Italy due to the water retentive soil. There are local wine cooperatives at Locorotondo (vino blanca) and Martina Franca (vino rosso) but you will also find small local wine producers where you can buy wine on the side of the road. You will love the wine but you will also love the price!
The Martina Franca area
The local towns are very different in character, one day you can be walking around the baroque 'centro storico' of Martina Franca, the next climbing the limestone steps of ancient Alberobello, town of 1000 trulli.(take a look at the world heritage site photos) A little further afield are the moorish walled towns of Ostuni or Monopoli on the coast, with its lively market where you can eat freshly caught octopus, drizzled in lemon juice. Matera town of stones, with its interesting 'sassi' has cliff dwellings (including a deluxe hotel for lunch) and cave churches with original frescoes dating back to the 8th century.
The unspoilt beaches of the blue Adriatic sea are about 25 km away by car, where we recommend you try some of the open air beach restaurants, selling fresh seafood literally ON the beach!
The local Puglian people are very friendly but do not all speak English so take the phrase book!
There is a safari park at Fasano for younger visitors and the renowned caves at Castellana Grotte are a spectacle not to be missed.

We had a very pleasant late-summer stay at this Trullo which we found well furnished and appointed. It was such a pleasure to be able to prepare in the kitchen all the wonderful vegatables, meats and cheeses etc which we bought in the local markets, and what markets they were! Whilst it was not too far from the nearby townswe liked the quiet rural surroundings and being able to watch the neighbours working on their vines and fruit trees (we picked some fruit in the grounds too!). The trullo itself was lovely to stay in, comfortable and clean, yet full of character and nice and cool on the hot days. We enjoyed relaxing on the terrace under the shade of the wisteria and I was impressed by the 'green' irrigation system which had kept the garden full of flowers even at summers end. The neighbours were friendly and helpful which all added to our memorable holiday in the sun. Thank you. |

"We have had such a lovely holiday in this little Trullo- a delightful home and the garden plus a wealth of wild flowers in the area has been a special joy " Mr and Mrs J Herefordshire.
"This Trullo is a wee gem of a find! Mr and Mrs G, Angus, Scotland
"Its such an idyllic setting, the uninterrupted views, and the lovely layout, with so much privacy. We had the most relaxing time and very much enjoyed cooking in the woodfired oven. A perfect romantic little holiday! Mrs K Manchester."
"If anyone who is a gourmet wants to visit somewhere not yet exploited by mass tourism, Apulia is a delight. There are lovely restaurants in Alberobello and one in particular has one of the best wine cellars in the whole of Italy! We have left details in the house for other visitors!"
Mr and Mrs H, Chelsea
" We thought we'd be going out every night but the local markets were so fabulous we found ourselves cooking up a storm in the well equipped trullo kitchen most evenings and eating seafood at lunchtime on the beach. We absolutely loved it and we'd recommend it to anyone. Matera where there is a whole town of cave dwellings and the caves at Castellana Grotte are also really worth a visit. " Mr and Mrs R, Chertsey, Surrey
