The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
Here, the sun, the Mediterranean Sea, incredible landscapes and famous monuments compete to seduce visitors. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Marseille, the second biggest city in France, has an amazing amount to offer. This year, the entire city of Marseille is coming together for the launch of “Marseille-Provence 2013”, named European Capital of Culture. For this occasion, Marseille is reaching out beyond the city limits to offer a large number of cultural events. This exceptional year will see the opening in spring of the new Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations), also known as the 'MuCEM'.
Winding narrow hilly streets with little surprises around each corner. Some quirky shops. Lots of eateries, most with al fresco dining, some with music. But many shops shut at 1pm for lunch. . The former Poor house (Hospice de la charite) is an interesting feature, but I didn't go into the museums inside. The Marseille Cathedral "Le Major" is quite nearby and well worth a look - it appears that the design was heavily influenced by that of the duomo in Florence. You can also walk to the Fort St Jean and the new Mucen. All of this may take you more than 3 hours, depending on how long you spend in exhibits/shops.
