The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Marseillan is an ancient Mediterranean harbour village steeped in history that has maintained its authentic charm. Located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the South of France, between Provence and Spain. It is made up of a maze of tiny streets that uncover the history of the area and houses just 4000 permanent residents. This town is close to significant French cultural treasures such as the ancient Roman Pont du Gard, the medieval walled city of Carcassone, and the Canal du Midi.
Due to the climate, this area of France is renowned for it wine making. Make time to stop off at the many vineyards to experience wine tasting, and Noilly Prat Liquor is produced in Marseillan village itself. This along with the oysters and mussels that are cultivated in this region makes this destination a favourite for food connoisseurs.
The Languedoc-Rousillon region boasts 300 days of sunshine each year. Since this area is one of the premier places for winemaking, there are vineyards everywhere, and the temperatures reflect this each year. Expect summer in Marseillan to be hot. Temperatures in excess of 85 degrees are fairly standard and the heat is arid rather than humid, so is more enjoyable and tolerable than other countries. Since this is the Mediterranean, the summer generally lasts long into October.
Marseillan area
Marseillan is often referred to by its local population as "Paradis sur Terre" (heaven on earth) for its beautiful surroundings, relaxed air and quaint nature. The house is ideally situated for exploring all the abundant amenities Marseillan has to offer. The village is well provided for, having supermarkets, patisseries, butchers, boutiques and banks on your doorstep. Every Tuesday the centre comes alive when the market is opened – providing fresh produce, arts, crafts and traditional goods.
The house is also just a three minute walk away from the harbour. Here you will find cafes and restaurants selling top quality food for excellent value for money. The Languedoc is renowned for its shellfish and you do not have to go very far to sample mussels and oysters harvested from nearby.
A glorious sandy beach is located just three kilometers away at Marseillan Plage. All the beaches along this stretch of the coast are idyllic and we would recommend you take time to explore to find your favourite. But if it’s a bit of adventure you’re after then you could visit the Canal du Midi. This famous canal stretches for some two hundred kilometers of beautiful, untouched greenery which you can walk or cycle along. If you’re feeling more courageous you could canoe some of the distance whilst taking in the scenery of isolated beaches, rock pools and the marine life that swims by. If you’re not quite up for the challenge though you could enjoy a relaxing spot of fishing instead!
