The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

If you are looking for a holiday that is stress free, situated in beautiful surroundings, the best there is to offer from shellfish and wine, you could not choose a better place to be than Marseillan, I spoke to a man several years ago, he lives on a boat in the Port, I asked him if he liked Marseillan as a place to live and Holiday in and he replied it is Paradis sur Terre,( Paradise on Earth) I thought what a lovely way to describe Marseillan, So I have used that phrase in my advertisments ever since.Marseillan is an ancient Phocean town, founded in the 6th century BC. It has kept the authentic character of a fishing village on the shores of the Mediterranean and the Bassin de Thau, which is famous for its cultivation of oysters and mussels. The town has many ancient Greek features and it is fascinating to walk through its tiny streets and discover the monuments, stones, gargoyles and individual doors of the houses which are steeped with the history of the Languedoc and the delight of the eye. Places to note are the historic town hall, St John the Baptists Church, La Maison de Famille d' Achille' and not to mention the dozens of other historical and cultural landmarks which can be found around Marseillan. For a wealth of information, please visit our web site .

Marseillan area

There are many things to see and do in the Marseillan area. For those sun worshippers; you can visit Marseillan plage which is only two and a half kilometres from the town, here you will also find Marche aux puce every sunday morning, a flea market with many bargains to be had . Also you have 18 kilometres of safe sandy beach that stretches from Cap d'Adge to Sete. Or if you feel like doing something slightly more active there's the Canal du Midi where you can enjoy cycling, walking, a spot of fishing and canoeing too. Then for a taste of some local seafood you can visit the Etang de Thau where its possible to take a short tour by boat of the oyster and mussel beds before visiting one of the many restaurants. It would also be impossible to leave Marseillan without visiting one of the Languedoc's famous vineyards, just a short distance away you will be able to find Domain de Moure - a local wine producer, or in the Town Centre there is the Domaine la Madeleine St-Jean, close to the Marina, you will find the Cave Cooperative here you can buy wine by the bottle or En Vrac (loose) Some fantastic duty free shopping isn't too far away either, in the small town of Perthus which is on the Spanish Border one and a quarter hours approximately, you'll find many goods available duty free. Here also is a Restaurant called Rossello, they offer a Buffet Libre and for 15 Euro you may eat and drink as much as you like, between the Salads,Fish, meat and deserts, with as much Red, White,Rose. and Sparkling Wine,it even includes Coffee, I would estimate there over 130 dishes to choose from, for Pictures and details, please visit our Web Site. If these things to do are not enough there's plenty more attractions like Le Pont du Guard and the Abbaye de Valmagne are definitely worth visiting. A short drive from the house towards St Thibery you will find A perfect example of a Roman Bridge, it is most beautiful and the perfect place to have a Picnic, also at Sete on Market Day there is a Street Market which occupies several streets in the Town, there is hardly a thing you cannot buy in this market, including Roasted Chickens. You will certainly not be at a loss of things to do here!..A short drive from Marseillan you go up into the Mountains to a Most Beautiful little Medieval Village Saint Guilhem le Desert, with Wonderful Examples of Roman Architecture, the Imposing Abbaye de Gellone, retrace in History the steps du Compte Guilhem, parent de Charlemagne who founded the Abbaye in 804. Nearby La Grotte de Clamouse , an Enormous Pre-Historic Cave, explore it's depths with a guide, see wonderful Stalagmites and Stalactites, Masses of Crystals illuminated by various coloured lights, with Organ Music in the background to give the place a sense of being in an enormous Cathedral. The Pont du Diable, this Bridge spans a river, legend has it that the Devil said he would build it for the Town, but would claim the soul of the first to cross it, so the townsfolk in order to cheat the Devil, sent a dog to cross the Bridge. Nearer to Home at Loupian there are the remains of a Beautiful Roman Villa with lovely Mosaic Floors. Tour the Antiques Shops at Pezenas, Le Cap D'Adge take a ride ten to fifteen minutes from the House, park the car, walk along the front to see and be seen, sit at one of the many Bars, have a cool drink, and admire the many Boats that if you are a Boating person you would die for. Every Tuesday there is a Market in the Town and on Thursdays in Adge, The Town of Sete which is the second largest Fishing Port in France, dozens of Quayside Restaurants, where the enormous Tuna Fishing Boats Moor, if you like to eat fish, it is all here. These are but a few of the many places you can visit, there is something for everyone, then at the end of a Fantastic day, go back to the house sit on the Terrace and have a quiet drink while you decide which Restaurant you might try, BEAR IN MIND THAT EVERYWHERE IN THE TOWN IS WITHIN EASY WALKING DISTANCE FROM THE HOUSE. We wish you a happy and unforgettable Holiday,,

Further details indoors:
There is a television that receives both English and French channels.

Being very old The house has retained several of it's original features, the Family would live on the second floor, the Animal Feed was stored on the top Floor and the Animals on the Ground Floor, there is a Hook at the top of the House from which there would be a Pulley used to haul the Hay for the Animals. The whole house has undergone extensive renovation, exposed roof beams, and masonary, half way up the stairs the original stone basin where people would wash,( no longer in use.) The stairs are a good size, not like some that are very narrow and steep, I take size 12 or 47 and they are fine for me.

Further details outdoors:
The Terrace is very private where you may sun bathe, and not have to worry that you will be over looked with a table and chairs and Umbrella, a good place to sit and plan your next days activities, and have a cool drink. There are extremely nice places you may visit, for a very comprehensive guide to all places of interest, please visit our web site using the link at the bottom of this page in the contact area, as it contains a wealth of information.
