The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Languedoc-Roussillon has got it all - mountains, beaches, country parks, wetlands, medieval villages, Roman cities and masses of rolling vineyards dotting the rugged but extremely beautiful countryside. Montpellier, Pezenas, Perpignan, Carcassonne, Narbonne, Sete and Agde are all within a short drive, each offering a unique insight into life here.
Then there's the weather. Mild winters and hot summers - cooled by Mediterranean winds. And there's the glorious in-between months, when things are a little bit quieter but the place equally comes into its own.
Marseillan area
Almost too much to mention, especially in summer. As Marseillan is situated on the huge L'Etang de Thau salt lake it means most activities focus around the water.
There are several sailing schools with boat hire, every type of water sports including kite-surfing and wind-surfing, as well as organised nature trails around the lake.
For those wanting to avoid water there are loads of other activities, including quad-biking, carting, paint-balling, tennis, horse-riding, bicycle rental and a permanent fun-fair situated at Marseillan-Plage.
The town has a bird museum, the famous Noilly Pratt distillery and its interesting guided tours, organised historical town tours, a permanent fish market, a bigger Tuesday morning market, and, to top it all, the wonderful port and marina.
For a small town the choice of restaurants is incredible, making it a real epicurean's delight. Top class restaurants include Le Château du Port, La Table d'Emilie and Chez Philippe, while there are also numerous good-value family restaurants over-looking the port.
Otherwise the many delights of Languedoc-Roussillon await you. In nearby Agde there is the Aqualand water park, together with a vast marina packed with yachts.
Beaches are also a feature of the immediate area, with huge stretches to explore starting 4kms away from the town, while other local fishing ports on the Etang include Bouzigues and Meze.
The surrounding countryside is magnificent, with an abundance of rolling vineyards and a national park harbouring the cooler climes of the Black Mountains is just half an hour's drive away. Many of the vineyards and wine co-operatives are open to visitors, which means plenty of opportunities to discover the local wines.
Further afield Montpellier, Pezenas, Bezier, Sete, Aigues Mortes and La Grande Motte harbour many attractions, and are all within an hour's drive; while the Pyrenees and the Spanish border are less than two hours on the auto route.
How to get there
Ryan Air flies to Marseilles, Nimes, Montpellier, Carcasonne and Perpignan, all of which are within two hours drive of Marseillen. Likewise you can also take the TGV train from Paris to Agde station, which is a ten minute drive from the town.
