The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc Roussillon region of France is blessed with its beautiful Mediterranean coastline and over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Marseillan is located on the Etang de Thau, an inland lake covering an area of over 7,500 hectares, which is connected to the Mediterranean by two canals. Being a salt water lake it is the centre of oyster and mussel farming for the south of France. It is possible to rent a house boat and travel along the canal du Midi, to the west all the way to Toulouse and to the east to Marseille. Other popular towns/villages on the lake include Bouzigues and Sete.
Within 30 minutes you can be in the mountains with stunning scenery, river swimming and great picnic spots. . Popular inland villages include Roquebrun and St. Guilhem le Dessert. Pezenas town is also within 30 minutes and renowned for its antiques with large antique street markets taking place in May and October. The bustling city of Montpellier is also about 30 minutes and worth a visit, even if its just to have a cool drink in Place de la Comedie and watch the world go by.
Marseillan area
Marseillan is located on an inland salt water lake called the L'Etang de Thau, served by two canals linking it to the Mediterranean, with vast areas of the lake given over to mussel and oyster beds.
The house is perfectly located between the beautiful port and the centre of town, with parking directly in front of the house.
Two minutes walk from the house you may sit at one of the many port side restaurants and watch the bustle of the harbour, with everything from simple fishing boats to luxurious houseboats arriving and leaving. In the port area there is the distillery of Noilly Prat, a famous Vermouth. There you can enjoy a guided tour of the whole production process and a tasting afterwards.
The centre of Marseillan town, also two minutes from the house has numerous restaurants and bars, with quaint village squares and the indoor market Les Halles, with something for everyone.
Every Tuesday there is a market in the centre of the town, again just a 2 minute walk from the house, with fabulous displays of fruits, vegetables, raw and cooked meats, English books, cheeses, olives, soaps, clothes and gifts - something for everyone. The famous Capelet or "greasy pole" competition is held on the 14th of July in the port. Every Friday night during the months of July and August, a street market is held in the centre of town. When you've finished shopping, sit and have a drink as you people watch.
Within 4 km of the house is the stunning beach of Marseillan plage, which is a 12km long stretch of beautiful golden sand. There is ample parking and numerous restaurants to enjoy. There's even a bouncy castle playground for the kids towards Sète.
Take a trip into the beautiful surrounding countryside, with vines as far as the eyes can see, and enjoy trips to some of the local vineyards. Two producers noted for great white wine are located on the road to Meze, namely Fadeze and Les Yeuses.
Only a short distance from Marseillan and you will find numerous beautiful and historic places to visit, including castles, abbey's such as the Abbaye de Vallemangne, spectacular gorges around the Pont de Diable, grotto's such as Les Grottes de Demoisselles and caves.
Some of the beautiful and historical cities in Languedoc include Beziers, Narbonne, and the walled city of Carcassonne. The nearest large town to Marseillan is Sete, which is the second largest fishing port in France and the largest on the Mediterranean.
After all the sight seeing, market shopping and lazing by the beach, sit and relax at one of the cafes and bars in the port, with a cool glass of wine, some tapas and watch the world go by. It really is a little slice of heaven.
