The Island of Gozo region
Gozo is a small island covering an area of 67 km or 26 square miles, it is 9 miles long by 4 ½ miles wide and known as the sleepy island full of grace and charm. Gozo's population is about 28.000 (approx). Despite its small size, Gozo has a lot to offer. Historical places can be found in an abundance, a visit to the Ggantija temples is a must! It is believed that these temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt in actual fact they date back to 3.500 years B.C.
Other places of interest include the museum of Archaeology in Victoria, which is full of archaeological remains and pre-historic artefacts. The Citadel (Victoria 'Capital City'), the folklore museum in Gharb, Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Calypso's Cave, which can be found in Xaghra. 'Ta Pinu' Sanctuary, where, at the turn of the century a local peasant woman had apparitions from Our Lady, is a very special and Holy Place. Xewkija Dome dedicated to St. John the Baptist is, 'Ta Cenc' cliffs and Dolmens, the Azure Window, the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock all in Dwejra, furthermore Ramla Bay with its unique orange coloured sand and the old part of Victoria are places to note and visit, whilst on the island.
Marsalforn area
Marsalforn bay lies between the villages of Xaghra and Zebbug and forms part of the locality of Zebbug. It is the most popular resort on the Island. Marsalforn offers a broad range of events and activities throughout the year and evidently you will witness Gozitan families enjoying their old habit of strolling back and forth along the marina of a summers evening. In winter months, the bay is pleasantly quite and offers a very peaceful stay.
A beautiful promenade lies to the left of the bay and to the right side one will find a beach. The small artificial port known as "Il-Menqa" gives shelter to the fishermen's boats. Marsalforn is by the way one of Gozo's three main fishing villages. There is a church dedicated to St. Paul, which was built on the recommendation of Bishop Pietro Pace who loved Marsalforn profoundly and even lived and bathed there each summer.
Marsalforn has several swimming and sunbathing locations, which include; sand, pebble and smooth rock. Besides, the rocky area to the left of the bay up to Santa Marija Point, which is a very popular swimming zone. The other side of the bay behind Il-Menqa up to Ghar Qawqla point offers equally good swimming and snorkelling sites. Motor and sailing boats give the place a lively look in summer while one can opt for a boat cruise around Gozo or just to Island of Comino. Furthermore it is a popular base for diving enthusiasts, who can choose from a variety of diving schools and diving destinations, apart from these leisure activities, Marsalforn is very well served with restaurants and bars.
Marsalforn is a composite word. "Marsa" is an Arabic word meaning `port` or `bay.` There is disagreement on the origin of the second part of the word - `forn` -. Forn means "a bakery" in Maltese, but it is highly improbable that this has anything to do with Marsalforn, for it is unlikely that a bakery would be built in an area with a small population. It is quite likely that this name, like that of other Gozitan ports, might refer to a type of ship. In that case it would derive from Liburna. an Illyrian type of a ship, which became livurna in Greek, and lifurna in Arabic. The name might also have been derived from forna, a word used by Gozitan fishermen to refer to " a cave hollowed out by the sea". There are several of these in Marsalforn, the best known being Ghar Qawqla `the cave at the steep hill`.
In essence Marsalforn is the only sea side location on Gozo that will offer you a broad and varied range of amenities and activities compared to other sea side locations on the island of Gozo, there is a vibrant evening feel to the place in summer months, but one that is extremely relaxed and thus doesn’t have the loud music pounding out of bars, just a very chilled relaxed atmosphere that will certainly drop you into 2nd gear.
