The Island of Gozo region
Gozo is a small Island of the Maltese Archipelago in the MediterraneanSea . The island is part of the Souther European country of Malta, after the Island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Compared to its southeastern neighbour, Gozo is more rural and known for its scenic hills, which are featured on its coat of arms.
Gozo provides a relaxing experience to its visitors. The island is peaceful and compared to the main island Malta, greener with beautiful countryside. Gozo is home to the popular Azure Window, a natural arch formed millions of years ago when a limestone cave collapsed. One can find a number of secluded beaches on the island and seaside resorts popular with tourists and locals alike. The most popular are Marsalforn and Xlendi Bay. Gozo is considered one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean and a Mecca for water sports.
Marsalforn is a fishing village on the north coast which has developed into Gozo's most popular sea resort. Its small size means that everywhere is within walking distance, and can be very tranquil in the off-peak seasons. It is well serviced with restaurants, shops , diving centers and other amenities such as super markets & pharmacy. It is only 3.5km from Victoria (capital of Gozo)
Marsalforn has now become Gozo`s Largest resort. The fishing village has gradually extended along the crescent -shaped rocky bay, and these days a lot of apartment blocks, souvenir shops are more prominent than a few fishing boats that dot the little harbor. The small beach attracts the crowds. The salt pans all around here date from 1740 and are still in use, producing several tons of sea salt every year.
The name of this village bears its value as a seaport- “Marsa” means `port` or `bay` while forn derived from lifurna, an Arabic word for `ship`. A grand open view of Marsalforn area is viewable from the top of il-merzuq. This volcano like hill has beckoned the attention of the people since 1901, when a large wooden cross was erected on its peak. Three years later, when Gozo was consecrated to Christ the Saviour, a stone statue of Christ replaced the cross . This was in turn replaced by a gigantic concrete statue towering twelve metres above the hill, which has been re-named tas- Salvatur (Our Saviours Hill).
