The Island of Gozo region

The Maltese archipelago consists of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino and is a relatively small group of islands in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea with a rich history accumulated over the centuries, thus offering the prospective visitor many varied places of interest and things to discover. Just over 90km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa, these islands have had various conquerors throughout the years, leaving behind them a mark in history.

Having a total population of around 400,000 people, Malta is the largest island. Gozo is the second largest and is 'greener' because it is more rural than Malta, where more crafts and traditions are still practiced among the inhabitants. Comino is mostly known for its Blue Lagoon, a crystal clear rocky beach and its other bays, one of which has of a nice four star hotel.

Enjoying sunny weather for the major part of the year, Gozo has a wide selection of different beaches and a laid back way of life. There are plenty of restaurants offering an exquisite and varied cuisine. With over 7,000 years of history, there is a great deal to see and do during your holiday in Gozo.

These islands have their own language – Maltese - which is based on Arabic but with various Italian and English loan words. English is also an official language and over 90% of the population talk and understand English very well. Italian is also spoken and understood widely. Malta joined the European Union as a full member in 2004 and adopted the Euro as its national currency in 2008.

Unique activities not to miss are the weekly village feasts in summer, including the feast of Santa Maria on 15 August, the daily open market of Victoria held all throughout the year, the Carnival of Nadur in February, the Good Friday procession in a number of villages throughout Gozo and the Christmas activity "Milied f'Ghajnsielem" in the village of Ghajnsielem during the festive period.

The village of Marsalforn is both an old fishing village as also a popular seaaside resort, which is very tranquil during the winter months but which comes to life during the summer months. This is an area where many Gozitans and Maltese have their summer residence which allows them to switch off from normal life and enjoy the summer life bathing in the clear waters of the various bays and creeks of Marsalforn, walking up and down the large promenade in the cool breeze of the evening and also enjoying al fresco dining at either one of the many restaurants in Marsalforn or at home on the terrace. On the eastern side of Marsalforn, one can choose to have a dip in the cool blue Mediterranean waters at either the Ghar Qawqla creek or the pebbly beach in the centre of Marsalforn. Alternatively, one can choose the western side of the bay close to the Otters Swimming and Waterpolo club, or to venture further west along the promenade and visit Qbajjar bay or Xwieni Bay, both of which form part of Marsalforn. The area is well served with all amenities, including supermarkets, pubs, restaurants (many of which offer al fresco dining), diving shops, cafeterias and all which is required to ensure a well-deserved Mediterranean holiday break. Our apartment is located just five minutes walk from the historical centre of Marsalforn, where one finds the Church of St Paul and also the Menqa (that is, the local fishermen's harbour) which is dotted with good value restaurants offering a wide variety of fresh fish and local meat dishes, pasta, pizza and much more. The picturesque beach is of Ghar Qawqla as also the pebbly beach in the centre of Marsalforn are just five minutes walk from the apartment, which is also just a 100 metres walk from the public parking area and from the well-equipped children's playing field.

"Nice apartment, well located for the beach and restaurants"

We stayed here for four days. Mario and his wife were very helpful giving us information before arrival and picked us up from the port and took us to the apartment and even showed us where local restaurants/ supermarket were. The apartment is well equipped and clean, they even provide beach towels which is very helpful. However one thing we struggled with was that there are skylights in each of the bedrooms which are not covered so we were woken up by the sun each morning, not what you want on holiday! Malforsarn was a really lovely place to have a few days. We just stayed in the area though as the only place that is easily accessible from Malforsarn without a car is Victoria. Think about hiring a car if you want to get around the Island. However Malforsarn had a nice beach and restaurants and bars, perfect for a few relaxing days. The apartment is a couple of minutes walk from the main stretch so was really quiet.
