Home description

Dar Zinnia is in the heart of the Kasbah, the oldest district of the Medina. You will appreciate its location, away from the hustle and bustle but only 10 to 20 mns on foot to all the major sites, perfect for sightseeing and shopping to your heart's contents.

Inside, bask in the tranquility of the inner courtyard with its fountain, or relax on the terrace, watching the sun rise above the snow-capped Atlas mountain while the storks fly overhead to their nearby nests. It is a traditional family home which we have entirely renovated, with the help of a local interior designer and her team of craftsmen, to provide modern comforts in authentic Moroccan style.

The Marrakech region

Marrakech is an ideal base for excursions by car, taxis or buses. Go to Essaouira, a lovely harbour town with its huge surfers' beach on the Altantic coast, or to the Valley of Ourika where the Marrackchis go and cool down at weekends. Visit the Ouzoud falls, Lalla Takerkoust lake, Oukaimeden ski resort in the Atlas mountain, berber villages, etc. Marrakech can also be a base for launching on a longer tour of the South Morocco desert.

The weather is pleasant all-year although it is prudent to pack a sweater and light jacket for those cool mornings and nights from mid-October to April . The summer heat which can start in April is very dry in Marrakech, and a permanent light breeze makes it very bearable.

Marrakech City / Medina area

Marrakech is great because of the omnipresent contrast between the old and the modern.

Sightseeing : Djema El Fna square, Bahia Palace with its wonderful mosaïc, Marrackech Museums, Majorelle Gardens, Menara Gardens

Shopping galore in the souks behind DJema El Fna, in the Mellah or go to high street shops in Guéliz where prices are set and you do not need to bargain.

A must : local hammams with a ''gommage" session, a vigoureous ''scrub" which makes you shed dry skin you did not know you had !!

Experience also the best of Morrocan and international food and european nightlife in oriental decor.

Attend the traditional Gnaoua music festival in Essouira or the Marrakech International Film Festival in December.

How to get there

Ther are many flights - scheduled, low-cost or charter - to Marrakech Ménara (RAK) from all main UK airports (with BA, Royal Air Maroc, Atlas Blue, Easyjet and Thompson) as well as from other European cities.

It only takes about 20 mns by car from the airport to our house. We can send a chauffeur to wait for you at the airport on request.

Cars can drive to the front door and park in a street nearby or in an attended car park near the Saadian Tombs.

Around the central patio are a formal dining room, a large Moroccan lounge with fireplace, the smaller sitting room with satellite TV, DVD and CD player and the small kitchen where the housekeeper will prepare the most succulent meals on request.

On one side of the first floor gallery are a twin and a double bedroom with their ensuite shower rooms. The other side is taken by a larger suite, its small sitting room with 2 occasional beds and the bathroom with a traditional tadelakt bath.

The fourth double bedroom with its ensuite shower room and the linen room are located on one side of the roof terrace.

Further details outdoors:
On the ground floor, the central patio with its refreshing fountain and plants is the heart of the "riad" . Outdoor meals can be taken there. Alternatively you can enjoy sunrise breakfasts or alfresco dinners on the second floor in a corner of the terrace.

For sun-lovers, there are three sun loungers and an outdoor shower on the roof terrace from which you have a panoramic view over the whole of the Medina, the storks' nests on the old ramparts and the Atlas mountain on the horizon.

Upstairs and downstairs recently planted trees and flowers guarantee bird singing particularly in the coolness of the mornings.

Further details

The guardian and the housekeeper speak French and Arabic. Between the two of them they will prepare delicious Morrocan meals on request, run small errands for you, advise you on local facilities such as swimming pools, hammams, restaurants, markets etc... and will do all they can to make your stay a memorable experience.
