The Marrakech / Essaouira / Marrakech Region
Marrakech, a mix of medieval and modern, an enchanted place buzzing with life. Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Atlas Mountains, its maze of honeycombed alleys glow in different tones of red as the sun moves from East to West. It is a place which floods the senses with strange and overwhelming sights, sounds and aromas, casting a strange, heady spell over the unsuspecting traveller; a place where Europe meets Africa and Arabia, where time becomes suspended, offering a glimpse of a rich and exotic past...
Marrakech City / Medina area
The only way to explore the medina is on foot. You'll be competing with donkeys and scooters, but somehow everyone seems to blend and it works out! Close to the riad you'll find numerous artisan shops, and 10 minutes away through the ancient streets, you'll reach the main souks area (market stalls), and also the historic Medersa Ben Youssef (the religious school where students used to study the Koran), and the Museum of Marrakech.
The Jardin Majorelle is in the new town of Gueliz. It's walkable, about 25 minutes, and well worth a visit. From there you can jump in a horse and cart to make a big tour of the ramparts (the great thick wall around that surrounds the medina), finishing up at the main square of Jemaa el Fna. Don't be bashful, bargain hard!
In the southern part of the medina you'll find several historical sites - the Saadian Tombs are magnificent tombs from several centuries ago. Ancient palaces, such as Dar Si Said (which now houses the Museum of Moroccan Arts), El Bahia Palace and El Badii Palace, with its resident storks.
How to get there
We're an easy 20 minute taxi ride from the airport. The most efficient way to get to the riad is to let us organise a car and driver to meet you. We'll then meet the taxi and guide you to the riad. The cost of the transfer is 15 euros.

Guestbook for Dar Zaman, Riad in Marrakech
“Beautiful, welcoming and relaxing riad” liz_on_holiday, london, Dec 1, 2008
We visited Marrakech and Riad Dar Zaman as a group of 6 adults and rented the whole riad for a long weekend. This allowed us the peace and quiet of this beautiful riad (with Hassan there as a gentle and generous presence, always checking if we needed anything) within the madness of Marrakech. Peter, the owner, arranged our taxis from the airport and met us to show us to the riad. This was very straight forward, only 'take the first right and follow the narrow street round'. We walked everywhere and experienced no problems in the souqs or the streets near the riad. Even after getting lost as soon as we got to the edge of the Medina and we could see the very short stretch from main road to the riad all was well. Peter was a very considerate host, he came to the riad every morning and evening to check all was well with us and provided ideas of places to eat, visit etc. We arrived in the evening and ate our first meal at Dar Zaman - it was fantastic food and met all our expectations. The welcome was made even better by the log fires in the dining and lounging rooms to counter the November chill. We ate there on our last evening as well, the food and the easy way Hassan looked after us made it one of the best places for us to enjoy time together. The roof terrace is a lovely space and even though we arrived at the end of November we still ate breakfast with a view of the Atlas mountains on the first two mornings. A great place to stay.
“Darn Good - Dar Zaman” TheLakeLads, CARDIFF, Nov 27, 2008
Staying at Dar Zaman made our holiday in Marrkech. We spent four nights there earlier in November and from the start to the finish of the holiday Peter could not have been more helpful, assisted by the ever attentive Hassan and Fatima. The riad was indeed an oasis of calm, beautifully decked out and the attention to detail was perfect - breakfast on the sunny terrace in the morning, with exceptional views over to the High Atlas and Mount Toubkal in particular, and roaring log fires in the evening. Peter went over and above what we could have expected in terms of making arrangements for us and providing advice and tips to make our stay very memorable. Hassan was always very helpful and pleasant and having tasted Fatima's cooking on the first night we choose to eat in the riad most nights thereafter. We would unreservedly recommend this riad to anyone wishing to stay in Marrakech and hope to visit again ourselves in the near future.
“A Delight” BonVoyageLondon, london, Nov 18, 2008
What a delight to have stayed at Dar Zarman with Peter as our Host. Peter enabled us (mother and daughter) to make the most of Marrakesh giving us guidance to have the courage to explore with confidence even when we were lost and going around in circles, it added to the holiday. Peter recommend and arranged a fantastic day trip in the mountains to swim and enjoy a lunch, (freshly cooked local food) which was the best of the holiday.
When you arrive in the square near to the Riad, the journey on foot going down tiny streets with children playing, locals moving about in their daily lives, you felt like your in the real Morocco, not in a hotel complex. When the door opened at a dead end down a tiny path, we were greeted by Peters smile, Hassans mint tea and the beautiful calm space that Peter has created of arches, water, plants and decor equally as tasteful, the area on the roof to relax and have breakfast. After spending the day in the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh, to come back to Dar Zarman to relax, was perfect as the quiet and beautiful surroundings is just what we needed before going out to the square in the evening. We can't thank Peter enough for being English (to answer our many questions) and giving us such a warm and friendly stay in Marrakesh which we won't forget.
