Home description

Riad Dar Zaman, meaning “old house”, is a jewel in the heart of the hectic Marrakech medina. The riad is ideally located north of the main square, close to the souks and Medersa Ben Youssef. Run by an energetic young team under the guiding hand of the English owner, this is a place for calm, for romance, for laughter and a truly great vibe.

A sumptuous breakfast is included in the room rate – a wonderful choice of fresh bread, croissants, pastries and crepes with honey and jam, yoghurt and eggs, served with freshly squeezed orange juice, tea and coffee.

The resident cook, Fatima, has been feted for her delicious Moroccan dishes. Dining at Dar Zaman is a feast for the senses. Whether it's Quail with Apricots, Beef with Prunes, or Couscous Royale, you'll be in for a true gastronomic delight.

The Marrakech / Essaouira / Marrakech Region

Marrakech, a mix of medieval and modern, an enchanted place buzzing with life. Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Atlas Mountains, its maze of honeycombed alleys glow in different tones of red as the sun moves from East to West. It is a place which floods the senses with strange and overwhelming sights, sounds and aromas, casting a strange, heady spell over the unsuspecting traveller; a place where Europe meets Africa and Arabia, where time becomes suspended, offering a glimpse of a rich and exotic past...

Marrakech City / Medina area

The only way to explore the medina is on foot. You'll be competing with donkeys and scooters, but somehow everyone seems to blend and it works out! Close to the riad you'll find numerous artisan shops, and 10 minutes away through the ancient streets, you'll reach the main souks area (market stalls), and also the historic Medersa Ben Youssef (the religious school where students used to study the Koran), and the Museum of Marrakech.

The Jardin Majorelle is in the new town of Gueliz. It's walkable, about 25 minutes, and well worth a visit. From there you can jump in a horse and cart to make a big tour of the ramparts (the great thick wall around that surrounds the medina), finishing up at the main square of Jemaa el Fna. Don't be bashful, bargain hard!

In the southern part of the medina you'll find several historical sites - the Saadian Tombs are magnificent tombs from several centuries ago. Ancient palaces, such as Dar Si Said (which now houses the Museum of Moroccan Arts), El Bahia Palace and El Badii Palace, with its resident storks.

How to get there

We're an easy 20 minute taxi ride from the airport. The most efficient way to get to the riad is to let us organise a car and driver to meet you. We'll then meet the taxi and guide you to the riad. The cost of the transfer is 15 euros.

Guestbook for Dar Zaman, Riad in Marrakech

A wonderful experience. Saffy17, New Zealand. NOV 8, 2009
We have just arrived home after having a wonderful holiday in Morocco. A highlight was the time spent at Dar Zaman. I read through all the earlier posts looking for something original to say but found all our sentiments about this delightful place and its lovely personel had been said many times before. Peter, Hassan and Fatima went out of their way to make us welcome, with Peter even supplying a mobile phone just in case we got lost in the Medina at night (a situation which did occur and lead to us being rescued by sweet Hassan on his trusty scooter, a highlight not to be missed by this 67 and 71yr old). We also found that this riad seemed to attract lovely fellow travellers whose company we really enjoyed. Again, many thanks Peter, Hassan and Fatima. Robyn and Ray

A great holiday. Family1WestMidlands, West Midlands, UK. NOV 5, 2009
We have just got back from a thoroughly lovely holiday at Dar Zaman. All 4 of us believe we really couldn't have stayed at a better riad. When you stay at Dar Zaman you feel so at home thanks to the hospitality and generosity of Peter. Hassan and Fatima are delightful and can't do enough for you. Everything written about Fatima's cooking is very true - her tagines are to die for and my daughter has missed her cooking since arriving home. Hassan is the sweetest young man and makes your stay a real treat and is always there if you need anything.
The location is great because you are far enough away from the noise of the square but within walking distance. The rooms are decorated lovely with gorgous wooden doors and tastful furniture. Peter arranged all of our trips for us from visiting the Atlas mountains (which is a must) to days out at the water park which made the holiday so easy and relaxing knowing that we were in safe hands. There is not one bad thing to say about Dar Zaman, even the other guests were delightful. Would definitely go back again and felt rather sad to say goodbye to such friendly people.

Wonderfully welcoming riad. CoventryJennys. Coventry, UK. OCT 23, 2009
We enjoyed a few days with Peter, Hassan and Fatima for my husband's 60th birthday. The welcome was wonderful and everybody exceeded our expectations. The riad is very cosy and homely with a wealth of personal touches. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
