The Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region

Marrakech is the most exotic city in Morocco, a fascinating urban theatre situated within easy reach of the High Atlas Mts, where caravanserai from sub Saharan Africa stopped to trade in the great market place or 'souks'. Marrakech is as well placed now as it was then, with the great deserts of the south beyond the High Atlas Mts, as well as being within reach of the coast at the enchanting resort of Essaouira.

A good train service connects Marrakech to Tangiers, and the Imperial cities of Fez and Rabat, as well as Casablanca. There is also a motorway from Casablanca to Marrakech.

While there are monuments and museums to see in Marrakech, the city itself is perhaps the most memorable. A stroll through the labyrinthine alleys of the Medina and the chaotic 'souks', followed by people- watching from a chic pavement café on a wide boulevard of the French-built new town, shows clearly the contrasting traditional and modern aspects of Marrakech.

These contrasts mean there are a range of activities, restaurants and entertainments to suit all tastes and budgets, and this range is growing constantly.

Here is a selection of the main sights to see:

• Jmna El F'na square

• The Saadian tombs

• The El Bahia palace

• The Badi Palace

• The Dar Si Said museum

• The Katoubia minaret

• The Marrakech museum

• The Ben Youssef medersa

• The city walls

• The Majorelle gardens
