The Marrakech region
Marrakech, one of the great cities of North Africa, is the gateway to the desert and the Atlas Mountain a ‘Pink City’ set against a backdrop of snow capped mountains of the Atlas in an oasis of date palms.
The magical city of Marrakech is a city of labyrinthine alleyways, secluded palaces, museums, mosques and markets. Its soukhs are famous for their dazzling variety of spices that assault the senses, Berber rugs and for fine quality leatherwork.
Founded in the 11th Century by Almoravids, nomadic Berbers from the Western Sahara, the city became one of the Islamic world’s most important artistic and cultural centres and the capital of their empire. Today it is still an important cultural centre with a wealth of architectural splendours and historical artifacts. During the French colonisation of Morocco a Ville Nouvelle or new town was added with its wide orange tree and palm lined avenues. It is home to the finest of modern resort style hotels and restaurants. Split into two areas, Gueliz and Hivernage the new city is quickly becoming as vibrant as the old; albeit with less character.
One of the four Imperial Cities of medieval Morocco and protected by the ramparts of an extensive Kasbah, Marrakech sits at the gateway to the Atlas, the desert and the coast. For many of the nomadic berbers it became an important trading post, for the trading of slaves. The city is still frequented by travellers, today trading only on stories in Djemaa El Fna, a square that marks the centre of the old city or ‘medina’. Here, at sunset the square thousands of people gather; the story tellers, acrobats, snake charmers and henna body artists congregate to display their skills vying for the attention of passers by. Food stalls come alive selling freshly squeezed orange juice and grilled delicacies.
Marrakech City area
Marrakech is not only a fantastic city, it is also a symbol of the Morocco that once was, and which still survives here. The streets of the old and pink city have been too narrow to allow the introduction of cars, and tourists searching for the "real" Morocco have turned the medieval structures of Marrakech into good business. The hordes of tourists that come here all through the year have still not managed to change its character. Actually their high number contribute in a postive way to preserve one of the greatest monuments of the Morocco that once was. And the people of Marrakech love their city even more, and Moroccans all over the country would not let down an opportunity of visiting it. The most worthwhile tourist traps are collected inside a rather small zone, starting in the north with the suuqs, continuing through the town square of Jemaa l-Fna with its crowd of storytellers, musicians and the Koutoubia mosque which is visible from practically anywhere in Marrakech. Going beyond this, the Menara gardens- by young Marrakechians considered as the most romantic place in town- is high up on the list. But don't forget to visit one of the many examples of sights left by the many Europeans and Americans who fell so much in love with Marrakech that they erected their palaces and gardens here.
