Located on the ground floor, directly opposite the pool, our Grand Salon (lounge) doubles as a breakfast/dining room. Comfortably seating up to 20 guests, the salon is stylishly designed and has been recently refurbished in beige, cream and opulent red. The salon has a corner fireplace with warming log fires lit on the occasional chilly winter evening.
Facilities in the salon include twin reversible air-conditioning/heating units, a wide-screen TV with a Made-in-Morocco film collection, DVD/CD/radio stereo, wireless internet access, selection of games and a growing collection of books and other reading material. The walls of the Grand Salon are adorned with a selection of fascinating sub-Saharan carved masks, each with a story to tell.
Close to the pool is a massage room and hammam. A massage from our experienced masseuse, Rachida, can be arranged locally with a day’s notice. A range of treatments are possible.
A smaller salon is located in and around a second palm-fringed courtyard in our adjoining house. With a fountain and fresh juice/coffee bar the Douriya Salon is a popular spot for breakfast, afternoon coffee or early evening fresh fruit cocktails.
Further details outdoors:
A key feature of Riad Africa is its central courtyard pool – perfect for a quick dip after a day sightseeing. At 16 square metres in size and with a depth ranging from 0.8m to 1m it is one of the largest pools of over 1,000 riads located in Marrakech medina.
Covering almost 250 square metres Riad Africa’s roof terrace is a real haven of peace and tranquility, offering wonderful views out over the medina to Djemaa el Fna and Koutoubia. A Caidal Tent provides respite from the sun and a place to lounge and relax.
Garlanded with yuccas, geraniums, bougainvillea, lemon and orange trees the terrace is a delightful spot to take breakfast or a romantic candlelit evening meal. Sun loungers and parasols are available for guests wishing to lay back in the shade. In winter months the peaks of the High Atlas Mountains can be seen to the south of the city.

Like Fes, Meknes and Rabat, Marrakech is one of Morocco's famous Imperial Cities. Renowned for its wonderful climate and for a setting as remarkable as it is varied, it is currently one of the world's top travel hotspots. With palaces and palm groves, rose gardens, and a backdrop of the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas mountains it is the capital of the Moroccan South, a cultural crossroads and keeper of tradition and folklore. The ancient pink-walled Medina contains a wealth of rich architectural heritage, and the real highlight - Place Djemaa el Fna - is like no other square in the world!
Founded in 1062 by Almoravids from the Sahara, this Berber city was once the hub of a great empire that stretched from Algiers to Spain. Throughout its near 1000-year history Marrakech has been the capital of Morocco on several occasions under different dynasties, and is today a favoured city of Morocco's young and dynamic King Mohamed VI.
The Marrakech City / Medina area
Riad Africa is located in a safe and peaceful residential neighbourhood in the Riad Zitoun Lakdim area of the Medina. Offering easy access (just a 2 minute walk from the taxi stand and bank) it takes just 5 minutes to walk to the bustling Djemaa el Fna square along the popular/easy to navigate Riad Zitoun Lakdim street. An excellent choice of local restaurants, cafes and shops is located within a 5 minute radius on foot, including the highly rated and atmospheric Kosybar. Others attractions located close by the riad include the Mellah, Kasbah and Dar Si Said Museum.
Marrakech is a city for discerning travellers with a keen interest in culture and a couple of days is simply not enough to fully discover the wealth of attractions this city offers. The minaret of Koutoubia Mosque is the landmark and emblem of the city. Other important quarters worth a visit within the old city ramparts include Kasbah and Mellah (the Jewish quarter), both in the south and close to the Royal Palaces (closed to visitors). The Saadien Tombs and Dar Si Said Museum are also of particular interest.
A number of day trips are possible from Marrakech for travellers just spending a few days in the city. Popular options include a day trip to a typical Berber village in the Atlas - Imlil is popular, as is the Ourika Valley. Camel rides are an option, though perhaps best done in the Sahara. Quad bike trips, bicycle hire and a scenic balloon flight are other options. Families may enjoy a visit to Oasiria, a waterpark on the edge of Marrakech with beach, pools, slides and fun for the kids.
A full range of excursions are available through 'Specialist Morocco', our expert UK-based tour operator specialising in private tours and holidays to central and southern Morocco, the Sahara, Atlas and Atlantic. Established by one of the co-owners of Riad Africa, Specialist Morocco offers a choice of 4x4 tours to the Moroccan Sahara's first 'in-style' private tented camp rental, 'Sahara Safari Camp', and beyond. Why not combine a few nights in Riad Africa with 2 or 3 nights in the southern oases and Sahara? Please contact us for further details and rates, or via the holiday lettings enquiry system.
