The Dordogne region

The discovery of remains at Les Eyzies in the middle of the last century, and then at La Madeleine, led to a rush of archaeologists and curio-hunters, who found this to be one of the richest sites in the world.

Many activities are available for adults and children. Apart from visiting the ancient Bastide towns and the hundreds of authentic chateaux, there is hiking, canoeing, nature parks for the kids and visiting Troglodyte dwellings.

The Dordogne is not just about glorious scenery, old castles, great wine and food and long summer evenings by the pool. If you are serious about golf, there are three great golf clubs within 30 minutes from here.

Famous throughout the middle ages as a place for pilgrimage. Rocamadour was a major pilgrimage site and a staging post on the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. St Bernard, numerous kings of England and France and thousands of others crawled up the 200 odd chapel steps on their knees to pay their respects and seek cures for their illnesses.

350 more Homes and Castles of 600 counted.

Rock paintings on cave walls, Gallic dry-stone huts (bories), Roman remains, Romanesque churches, rock shelters (cluzeaux), round towers in the French style, square towers in the English style, fortified towns (bastides) and castles...

They all have something to tell us about the spiritual life of the caveman, or wars and religious life in the Middle Ages. Everything here reminds one of a history shaped by men's love for this enticing land, where man meets his match in nature.

"A Beautiful Location and Wonderful Hosts"

We have just returned from 9 nights at Lieu de Bedy. It was the most wonderfully relaxing holiday. The accomadation is in a beautiful location with views over woodlands and fields and is ideally located for exploring the surrounding areas. The house is very well equipped with everything you need for dining in or just enjoying your holiday. The owners, who live next door, made our stay so enjoyable and were always on hand to offer advice on the local area.
