About this location
The Rethymnon Prefecture region
Crete, an island renowned for its natural beauty and diverse landscapes, speckled with mountain ranges and dotted with caves. The most dramatic features though are the spectacular gorges that cut through the mountains and spill out to sea. The rugged interior is interspersed with vast plateaus and fertile plains. The east boasts Europe's only palm-tree forest beach and the south coast has some of the most stunning beaches and isolated coves.
Maroulas: is a picturesque medieval village set above the bay of Rethymnon. The village is a UNESCO heritage site and features two watchtowers from the times of the Venetians. The cobbled streets and stone paths serve pretty whitewashed houses, three little tavernas and a few local shops. The village, although very quiet, is just a few minutes away by car from the town of Rethymnon, and 3km from some of the most outstanding beaches in the area.
Places close by:
Rethymnon is on Crete's north coast and ranks as the island's cultural centre being home to several museums, to the philosopical branch of the University of Crete, and other famous landmarks. The Fortezza, a fortress from the Venetian era, overlooks the picturesque Port of Rethymnon which is framed by the modern port's piers. The Old Venetian Town radiates out from the fortress along narrow lanes with small shops, arts and crafts workshops, restful bars, and numerous restaurants. Every Thursday, the port hosts the legendary weekly market of Rethymnon.
Platanias: With a beautiful sandy beach and a choice of peaceful or lively nightlife, Platanias has everything for a perfect family holiday where everyone is catered for.
Bali is a small fishing village with several small coves and bays with sand and fine shingle beaches. The traditional harbour, surrounded by excellent tavernas, is a delight during the warm summer evenings. There are a selection of shops and bars, along with everything you need for a relaxing holiday to the island of Crete.
