The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region Turkey is a country where 'east' meets 'west', and this wonderfully cosmopolitan land is still the best opportunity to experience a friendly European atmosphere combined with exotic Asian charm.
A vast and spectacular country with a rich history stretching back for centuaries, an increasing number of exceptional Turkish resorts are providing some of the best Mediterranean holidays on offer. For beach lovers there are literally thousands of miles of simply stunning coastline, whilst inland there's a rich 1,000 year old heritage to enjoy.
Once a small fishing port, Marmaris has become one of Turkey's biggest tourist destinations. Located on the Aegean/Lycia Coast, its town and marina is surrounded by pine-covered hills and rambling mountains.İcmeler is only 7km outside Marmaris in the next coast line inlet which has a beach front of approx 2km. For those that like to walk there is a foot path which will take you from İcmeler to Marmaris along the beach front.
Marmaris / Icmeler area
. Marmaris / Icmeler area Places to Eat/Drink There are lot's of places to eat and drink in Icmeler and also in the old village, with a variety of menus, varying from typical Turkish, European, Chinese, Indian and Italian. The cost's may vary only a little (1 or 2 Lira) normally the nearer to the beach you go the more expensive the meal is. There are many bars if you just want a drink . Tha majority of restaurants have family entertainment with belly dancing (customers joining in at times) break dancer's and traditional turkish dance shows as well as the bar boy's doing their show's and also lively music until midnight. there are 2 nightclubs in İcmeler which are open till 4am one of them has foam parties.
Transport Icmeler is on the flat and within easy walking distance, we wouldn't recommend hiring a car unless you are a very confident driver around town as the Turkish drivers are a little unpredictable. If you wish to go into Marmaris you have 3 options: 1. Dolmus (mini bus): Hail a Dolmus and it will only cost you 1.75 lira (2007) for the journey. They can get very crowded and the drivers can be a little erratic.
2. Taxi: If you want to travel in a bit more comfort use a taxi. The cost can vary from 10 - 25 lira but be prepared to haggle and always agree a price before you get into the taxi. 3. Water Taxi: İt is very relaxed, you can get some sun and admire the mountain views as you travel. They depart regularly from the Jetty’s located on the beach front's and the cost is about 7 lira per adult, children travel half price and often free if you are prepared to haggle, you may get disount if your also in a group but then again you must haggle..
Excursions If you want to see a little more of Turkey there are numerous excursions available: •Turkish baths –better done within the first 2 day's as it is known to enhance the tan •A trip to the Marmaris water park (Newly opened in 2006) Is well worth a visit, particularly if you have children. •The Jeep Safari is an exciting trip if you like large water guns and getting very wet, good for the older children. •A trip to Rhodes (normally once a week),is very nice for shopping and sight seeing around Rhodes old town. •An excellent relaxing day trip is a boat trip to Dalyan, Turtle Beach you may see the odd turtle and the mud baths great fun but smelly. •For history lovers the Epheses trip is a must but be warned it can be long day taking 4 hours to reach Epheses and then walking through the site may take about 2 hours and then the journey back. The 2 day trip to Epheses and Pammakulle is more leisurely and better. •Mosques: Foreign visitors should remove their shoes before entering a mosque. Try not to visit during prayer time. Women should also cover their heads and arms and not wear mini skirts/shorts or beach wear.
Shopping •General food and supplies:The Tansas supermarket is the nearest large supermarket about 10 minutes walk for your large weekly shop or If you just want milk and water etc there is a small supermarket a few hundred yards from the apartment. In Marmaris there is Migros and an even bigger Tansas which are more like large hypermarkets. •Weekly Market: There is a weekly market in Icmeler on a Wednesday, this is definitely an experience. İf you are prepared to haggle you can get some good bargains. There is also high quality fruit, vegetable, Turkish Delight and spices for sale. There is a similar market in Marmaris on a Friday. This is located close to the PTT post office. •Bazaars:There is a small underground bazaar in Icmeler (under the idas hotel complex) but the largest bazaar is located in Marmaris just step off the dolmus at the statue of Ataturk on the marina front and you walk straight in the bazar. •Jewellery: You will find many jewellery shops in Icmeler and gold is particularly of excellent value, if you have a special design you want they can make it for you normally within a few days.
Hairdressers and Barbers A visit to the hairdressers is an experience. You can experience the luxury of a real shave, massage and all the trimmings, Ladies can have their hair colour done, their nails etc for less than ½ the UK price, for the children they can have their hair braided and can get tramlines and any designs they can draw cut into there hair.
Health The pharmacists are all really helpful and most speak good English. You can buy some prescription drugs over the counter such as antibiotics for about £4. There is a small tourist hospital in Icmeler, which has a good reputation and a larger hospital can be found in nearby Marmaris (very good and clean)
Banks: Numerous banks are open Mon-Fri only 8.30 -12.00 & 13.30-17.00 Cashpoints are available (24 hour) in the main square and will give you currency in Lira, GB Pounds or Euros. There is also a currency exchange on the main street (please read all signs carefully)
