The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turqoise Coast of Turkey is noted for its guranteed hot, dry climate from May to October. Situated just 9km west of the bustling resort of Marmaris, Içmeler is its quieter neighbour ideally suited to couples and families who like a quieter, friendlier resort. Lying at the foot of picturesque mountains, it is situated on a large spectacular bay with a large beach flanked by a promenade that goes all the way to Marmaris The beach also caters for a wide range of water sports. The beach can be crowded in high season, but it’s easy to escape if you take one of the numerous boat trips around the bays or further afield to such to places such as Dalyan and the famous turtle beach and mud baths. You can also take a taxi boat to and seek out one of the deserted beaches around the peninsula near to the village of Turunc. Icmelers strict noise regulations ensure that the resort goes quiet on the stroke of midnight, although the bars and restaurants remain open well into the early hours. The canal area that runs down to the beach has a lot of atmosphere is lined with lively restaurants and craft and gift stalls.
Marmaris / Icmeler area
Places to Eat/Drink There are 100’s of places to eat and drink in Icmeler, with a variety of menus, varying from typical Turkish, European, Chinese, Indian and Italian (Pizza). Prices vary only a little. As a rule of thumb the nearer to the beach you go the more expensive the meal is. There are many bars if you just want a drink . Tha majority of restaurants have family entertainment with lively music and dancing until midnight. Nightclubs a few and far between and not well frequented.
Transport Within Icmeler, everything is on the flat and within easy walking distance, we would not recommend hiring a car unless you are a very confident driver as the Turkish drivers are a little unpredictable. If you wish to go into Marmaris you have 3 options: 1. Dolmus: Hail a Dolmus and it will only cost you a few Lira for the journey. They can get very crowded and the drivers can be a little erratic. 2. Taxi: If you want to travel in a bit more comfort use a taxi. The cost can vary from £5 to £10 be prepared to haggle and always get a price before you get into the taxi. 3. Water Taxi: Our preferred method if travel to Marmaris is the water taxi, it is very relaxed, you can get some sun and admire the view as you travel. They depart regularly from the Jetty’s located on the bay and the cost is about £7 per adult, children travel half price and often free if you are prepared to haggle.
Excursions If you want to travel wider there are numerous excursions available: •Turkish baths –better done early as it is known to enhance the tan •A trip to the new Marmaris water park (opened in spring 2006) Is well worth a visit, particularly if you have children. •The Jeep Safari is an exciting trip if you like large water guns and getting very wet, good for the older children. •A nice trip for the adults is the weekly hydrofoil day trip to Rhodes, very nice shopping and sight seeing around Rhodes old town. •An excellent relaxing day trip is a boat trip to Dalyan, Turtle Beach and the mud baths ( don’t expect to see any turtles though). •For history lovers the Epheses trip may appeal but be warned it is a very long day taking 4-5 hours to reach Epheses and then you may only spend 1 -2 hours there and then a long journey back. The 2 day trip to Epheses and Pammakulle may be more leisurely but still a long way. •Mosques: Foreign visitors should remove their shoes before entering a mosque. Try not to visit during prayer time. Women should also cover their heads and arms and not wear mini skirts or shorts.
Shopping •General food and supplies:The Tansas supermarket is the nearest large supermarket about 10 minutes walk, you may want to grab a Taxi back if you have a lot of shopping. If you just want milk and water etc. there is a small supermarket a few hundred yards from the apartment. In Marmaris there are a number of large hypermarkets. •Weekly Market: There is a weekly market in Icmeler on a Wednesday, this is definitely an experience. Be prepared to barter hard and you can get some wonderful bargains. There is also high quality fruit, vegetable, Turkish Delight and spices for sale. There is a similar market in Marmaris on a Friday. This is located close to the PTT post office. •Bazaars:There is a small underground bazaar in Icmeler but the largest bazaar is located in Marmaris. •Jewellery: You will find many jewellery shops in Icmeler and gold is particularly of excellent value.
Hairdressers and Barbers A visit to the hairdressers is an experience for all the family. Dad can experience the luxury of a real shave, massage and all the trimmings, Mum can have her hair colour done, her nails etc for ½ the UK price, the girls can have their hair braided and the boys can get tramlines and any designs they can draw cut into there hair.
Health The pharmacists are all really helpful and most speak good English. You can buy some prescription drugs over the counter such as antibiotics for about £4. There is a tourist hospital in Icmeler, which has a good reputation and a larger hospital can be found in nearby Marmaris
Banks: Numerous banks are open Mon-Fri only 8.30 -12.00 & 13.30-17.00 Cashpoints are available and will give you currency in Lira, GB Pounds or Euros. There is also a currency exchange on the main street
How to get there
Flights: Guests generally fly to Dalaman airport and flights can be booked from most major UK airports. We recommend the following websites:
1. Fly Thomas Cook : Thomas Cook Airways http://book.flythomascook.com/
2. Holidays 4 U : Turkish specialist using Onur air (Turkish airways) www.h4u.co.uk
There are many companies that will provide transfers from Dalaman to Icmeler. We recommend: http://www.icmeleronline.com/ , who charge £90 (both ways) for a minibus transfer. Taxis will cost approximately £50 each way. We can put you in contact with car hire firms if you prefer to self drive.
