About the home

Recently renovated and redecorated throughout, this south facing cottage offers a country farmhouse feel with modern comforts.
Situated in a sleepy country hamlet the secluded garden offers a splendid view down the valley. Rural but not isolated, the cottage is well placed for exploring the delights that Burgundy has to offer.
Walking and cycling start at the front gate, with country lanes and forest trails to be explored. Numerous lakes and rivers within easy reach make the area an angler's paradise. Local markets, wine tasting(Cote de Beaune, Beaujolais etc), sightseeing and for the more active, adventure activities. At 1 hour 15 mins by TGV even Paris or Euro Disney is a possible day out.

Entrance through conservatory into fully equipped kitchen/ diner. Utility room through to shower room off to the side. Archway though to lounge with wood burning stove. Kitchen and lounge has exposed stone walls. French doors out to patio and front garden.
Short flight of stairs from lounge to 2 double bedrooms, a twin bedroom and bathroom.
All rooms have electric radiators, bathrooms have heated towel rails.
If required, single beds may be substituted for doubles. Please call to discuss your requirements.

Front patio with large six place dining table. Front garden has lawn with stone well. Summer kitchen leads to rear patio and garden which has sun loungers and garden furniture. There is a slide & swings for small children.
Off-road parking to the side and rear of cottage.
Fields to the rear of the cottage give an additional play area for the kids or additional parking if needed. Salt Water Pool size approx 24ftx12ftx3ft6
Please bring your own towels for outside use.

The Burgundy / Saone-et-Loire region

Burgundy is mid way between Paris and the Mediterranean coast which makes it warmer than the south of England in spring and summer. On the other hand, being well inland (2 hours drive from Switzerland) winters are colder and there is a good possibility of snow at Christmas. The region is renowned for its gastronomic delights and particularly its fine wines. Many of the most famous names are within a short driving distance. Burgundy has played an important role in French history and consequently has much of architectural interest; ancient Celtic and Gaulois settlements, Roman remains and more “recent” chateaux and the palaces of the Dukes of Burgundy. The region also boasts a geographical diversity; from sleepy farming hamlets to bustling commercial centres such as Chalon, Beaune and Dijon; from the flat plain of the river Saône valley and the vine covered ridges in the centre of Burgundy to the steep wooded slopes of the Morvan National Park; from fast flowing mountain streams and waterfalls to tranquil lakes. Rest assured, Burgundy has something for everyone.

The Marmagne area

The nearest restaurant is a 30 minute walk or a 2 minute drive from the cottage.
Marmagne is the closest village (4km) and has 2 restaurants, 2 bars, baker, small general store, chemist, post office, library, doctor's surgery and a tennis court. There is also an extensively stocked cave (wine cellar) where you can taste before buying.
Autun is a 15min drive away. Not only is it a large town offering supermarkets, restaurants, a swimming pool (outdoor lido in summer), boating lake, bowling alley and a golf course, it is also of architectural interest. Being an ancient Roman stronghold and administrative centre it has remarkably well preserved ramparts and an amphitheatre. Autun’s cathedral is on the Northern European pilgrimage route down to Lourdes. The indoor/ outdoor market is well worth a visit.
Le Creusot is also a 15min drive away. Being larger than Autun, it has more shops. There is also golf, a swimming pool, bowling alley and the Chateau with its park and animal enclosure. Le Parc des Coombes on the hill overlooking Le Creusot has karting and a number of rides and amusements. A narrow gauge train does a tour of the hill and a return trip down into Le Creusot.
The Morvan National Park starts a 15 minute drive away. Covering a vast area, it offers a large selection of things to do and see. Archeological digs of ancient Gaul settlements, Celtic pathways, forest paths, mountain springs, waterfalls and lakes. Tourists are catered for with centres for hiking, pony trekking, fishing and a whole host of water sports.

“Superbly equipped base for touring Burgundy” We stayed for a week towards the end of October and even managed to sunbathe in the lovely garden! Everything you need for a stress free, relaxing break away from it all, though we used Les Lauriers as a base for exploring Autun, Beaune and Dijon. Jeff and Pauline are excellent hosts and nothing is too much trouble. The cottage is very comfortable - loved the wood burning stove, which kept the whole place nice and toasty. We would definitely recommend a stay here. Response: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Can't guarantee the sunshine but we do try to guarantee a warm welcome. The cottage makes an ideal base, wether you want to chill out 'chez vous' or spend time visiting the many places of interest in this region of France.

“Excellent, pretty cottage, well worth a visit” We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage where you could rest and relax in the house or in the large garden which is much bigger than the pictures show. Jeff and Pauline were very welcoming and helpful and it was kind of them to let us help ourseleves to the growing fruit and veg, the courgettes were delicious and we were just able to try a couple of ripe raspberries. It was great to arrive to find the cottage so ready for us with all the basics, so well equipped and little things that make a holiday special. We enjoyed the suggested walks around the local area which were just long enough in the hot weather. It was good to sit in the house, in the garden, by the pool and look at the superb view or listen to the animals in the local fields, just what we needed. We would like to have used the excellent 4 bikes left for us but some of us were not fit enough for the hilly area!!! Maybe if we had taken a bike rack we could have used them in the surrounding area. We liked visiting Autun especially on market day and the people there and in Marmagne were so friendly. If you want to get away from it all, not have to drive too far and just have time out then this is a great place to come. We have stayed in French accomodation since 2004 and this is by far the best cottage we have stayed in and Jeff and Pauline were most helpful from the moment we booked to the day we left- thank you! “Comfortable, well-equipped cottage with lovely garden and pool” Lovely spacious cottage, exceptionally clean and very well-equipped. Kitchen has everything you could possibly need if you don't want to eat out all the time, the 2 bathrooms are well-fitted, especially the downstairs shower room. Big sitting room with 2 settees as well as 2 easy chairs and a log-burning stove which was great fun on the chillier evenings. Clean heated pool, lovely big garden with lots of outdoor furniture and play equipment. Fruit and veg patch which Jeff and Pauline maintain for the benefit of guests - we had strawberries and gooseberries, and the courgettes were almost ready. Surrounding countryside is very beautiful with many interesting places to visit (we recommend Beaune). Lots of lovely friendly restaurants in the surrounding villages. Jeff and Pauline greeted us on arrival, gave us the necessary information to help us enjoy our stay, and then stayed discreetly away until our last evening. The cottage felt very private and comfortable, it is easy to see why it was renovated originally as a family home as it didn't have that "lettings only" feel that you often get. We would certainly recommend this to family groups or to couples, and we fully intend to return for another holiday there some time. “The gite was "as it said on the tin"!” Les Lauriers provided us (2 married couples) with a lovely week's stay, in a beautiful part of France. The gite was very comfortable, clean, plenty of space in all of the rooms and all the amenities that you would wish. The weather wasn't too kind to us for the first 3 days, so we did need the heating on and also we lit the wood burning stove. The latter was brilliant - in fact too warm! The last 3 days were beautifully sunny and hot, so we used the back garden, the garden furniture and the pool. We barbecued at the front of the house (tucked away down the side), which was usefully located near to the kitchen - ideal. Pauline and Jeff met us on our arrival and showed all the "in's and out's. We had to phone them a couple of times and they were very patient and helpful. If you are looking for a self-catering holiday in the most peaceful location, in a glorious part of France, then Les Lauriers is a great choice. “Superb Holiday” This gite was in a wonderful location and had everything and more we needed to make this a memorable holiday. The gite exceeded our expectations (the photos don't do it justice) and even though the weather restricted our use of the swimming pool, we enjoyed it when we could. The owners were attentive and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable without being intrusive, There was so much, countryside, ancient sites etc on our doorstep we didn't feel the need to go far. We particularly enjoyed Autun with its Roman amphitheatre and gateways, feeding the horses and just reloaxing in a very pleasant gite and garden. Response: Very pleased that our guests had a really good holiday and that the cottage proved such a hit, inside and out!
