The Stone Barn.
About the home
This is one of a pair of self- catering barns at Barrow Farmhouse. The accommodation is completely rural with views across the Kennet Valley although being adjacent to the Bath road there is a daytime traffic presence, but the road allows for easy access for day trips. There is walking access through the fields to the Fyfield/Marlborough downs, road access to the River Kennet, West Woods, a 20min walk to Marlborough, or to Manton with newly refurbished pub. The accommodation is smart and spacious. Free firewood is supplied for the woodburning stove. There is a TV and DVD, washer/drier, shower and toilet, kitchen with oven and fridge/freezer and two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two singles.Outside to the North the garden has a private patio and secure off road parking.Dogs are welcome but sorry no cats.Smoking banned inside the building itself. Internet access is available via a cable which connects to your laptop, wi-fi is weak or non-existant, so if you need access to the internet you will need a computer which will plug into the usb cable which might not be compatable with all smaller devices. Mobile phone reception is poor, vodafone seems to work outside the building and other networks have limited reception only.

This part of Wiltshire is steeped in history and includes ancient monuments at Avebury with its stone circle, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, all within 5 miles of the accommodation at Barrow Farm House. There is excellent walking and cycling from the doorstep and easy access to the Ridgeway, Savernake Forest,Marlborough Downs and the proposed Avebury to Stonehenge Trail. In the summer crop circles can be seen from Marlborough to Pewsey and beyond.
The Marlborough / Manton area
Marlborough is a small market town set in the heart of the Kennet Valley in East Wiltshire. The town itself is noted for its wide High Street and architectural splendour, dating in parts back to the 15th Century, and for the famous Merlins Mound in the grounds of Marlborough College. There are many places in the town and surrounding villages to eat and drink, the High Street enjoying a 'Cafe Culture' particularly during the Marlborough Jazz Festival and during the Summer School at Marlborough College. Marlborough also has a wide variety of shops and markets twice a week.

This suited us perfectly for a week as we were house-hunting rather than having a holiday. It is very accessible on the old A4 and well placed for the area we wanted to explore. Marlborough is very close by car. The accommodation is fairly basic but has a lovely warm wood stove and adequate facilities for cooking, washing and so on. The only down sides are that the A4 is very noisy in the second bedroom and there is absolutely no mobile phone signal in the cottage (O2 and Vodaphone). The promised internet wireless didn't work so that was irritating for us, although holiday users may not be bothered. |

We had such a wonderful time staying at Barrow farm, the place was full of old charm and beautifully presented. We had such a warm welcome from the owners who were very kind and helpful. Travelling from Australia with small children was stressful, however the homely feel, comfortable beds and lush surroundings soon made us relax and feel settled. We shall definitely love to return one day. |

The Barn was a comfortable and very easy to run holiday home. The woodburner stove was already alight when we arrived which was very welcoming. As all the rooms were adjacent to each other there were no stairs to go up and down, although there were a few steps from the parking area into the barn. Everything was clean and tidy and the beds were already made up for us, towels were also provided. There were some interesting books for all ages as well as some games to play. There was a television and also free internet access, a blessing having a 12 year old with us! We found the surrounding area was within easy distance to visit some interesting places during our 4 day stay. Would be very happy to be able to make a return visit. |
