Traditional Trullo from Apulia
from £86 /night help
Farmhouse | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 2
A holiday for nature lovers & gourmands alike (the property is in the Costal National Park Otranto-Leuca) at the centre of the beautiful Salento region of Apulia, famous for the beauty of its towns, countryside and sea. The house is on 2.5 acres of land, rich with olive, fig, orange and almond trees, as well as an organic vegetable & fruit garden. All food growing on the land, as well as our home-made olive oil & tomato sauce, is available for our guests to enjoy.
The Marittima di Diso centre with cafes, a pharmacy and 3 grocery stores is just 1km away. By day you can lie on the beach, go sailing, biking and scuba diving in the natural caves or take a break at the spas of Santa Cesarea Terme. By night you can get lost in the beautiful architecture of Lecce (the Florence of the South) or have fun in the nearby medieval villages of Otranto, Gallipoli and Castro with their restaurants and nightlife.
The 150 year old Pajara is a typical example of "vernacular architecture" developed by local farmers of the Salento region. At a time when every meter of land mattered, families expanded their farms by pulling stones out of the rocky ground until they created viable soil. They found a use for those stones, in building Pajaras for the purpose of having a refuge from the summer heat. Form followed function, as the builders conceived of a barrel vaulted ceiling to help hot air escape through the top, making the inside naturally cool and fresh. In 2007 the house was renovated for modern comforts, while maintaining the original design and rich historic elements.

The Puglia region
Puglia has everything to offer in a sunny region with warm people, amazing landscapes and great food. The summer weather is always beautiful, warm and breezy.
The Salento region has Lecce as its artistic capital with its unique Baroque architecture. Around Lecce there are many cute, little towns surrounded by the rolling hills of the countryside with olive trees, stone walls and vineyards.
There is over 150km of coastline of long beautiful beaches and high cliffs dotted with sea caves.
Marittima di Diso and Castro Marina are the towns closest to the property. Marittima is a lovely village of 3,000 people, 1 KM inland, immersed in nature. Castro Marina is a medeival village on the sea. It has a touristic harbour where you can rent a boat and go to see the worldwide famous Grotta Zinzulusa.
There are two beautiful squares on the sea with bars, restaurants, artisanal craft shops, and other amenities. Both towns have sport facilities. The sea is easily accessible and most of the people go to the beautiful Insenatura Acquaviva, one of the many local coves of the area.

"Absolutely perfect Mediterranean getaway"
We had the best week at the pajara, and are convinced that a large part of the reason is due to choosing to rent with the Arseni family. They are knowledgeable and proud of the area and provided the perfect jump off to the Salento region- from location, to advice,to the welcome basket of products they have produced.
The location itself could not be any better, between the beautiful water and coastline, the many interesting and picturesque
towns, and the vibrant local culture and food. The food in this region is absolutely incredible and between the garden, local merchants and restaurants you'll have plenty of opportunities to sample. Bikes are provided for you to do so, although renting a car to explore the greater region isn't a bad idea either.
The pajara itself is simple and lovely and well situated in a beautiful garden, maintained by the Arsenis, just near a cliff overlooking the coast. The village of Marittima has everything you could need; we used it for the excellent restaurant, fresh mozzarella, and pharmacy (for the tiger mosquitos you WILL encounter). The local cove for swimming is just down the hill, too. Be aware that there are bugs present at the pajara, but nothing harmful or unexpected for being somewhere a bit in nature.
If you're already looking in Puglia, you are probably aware of its many charms and attributes. There is no better place to stay than here to access all the greatness of this region. Another note is that we visited in October and found it perfect- hot but not unbearable during the day and water warm enough to swim in, and all without the crowds. We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more, and will most certainly be back!
