The Puglia/Molise region
Salento is the southernmost tip of Italy's stiletto. Bathed in sunshine year round, and steeped in a rich multicultural history, it's the perfect place to combine the two great pleasures of Italy: Art & Culture and the Sea. Beautiful Baroque limestone cities like Lecce, the Greek influenced white hill town of Ostuni, the small fortified city of Otranto, historic Gallipoli and the famous Valle d'Itria, home of the Trulli, are all within easy reach. Staying with us at Aquaduce places all this on your doorstep.
During the long, long summer, town Festa's are frequent and themed for the town Saint or a regional gastronomic delicacy that's just come into season. Day's and nights of food, processions, Salentino Pizzica music and the hypnotic Taranta dance, and of course light and firework displays that the rest of Italy has had to abandon for logistical reasons.
Artisans work in most towns, producing exquisite linens, bright, traditional ceramics, stone carving and wrought iron. In Maglie, the craft of Papier Mache becomes an art form.
Food in Salento is a reflection of it's geographical position and it's chequered history. The rich red soil produces Italy's finest olive oil, an abundance of fruits and vegetables, and cheeses that are seldom found elsewhere. The sea produces an array of shellfish and fish as curious and as vast as the coastline itself. With of course a dash of the heat of the pepperoncino so loved in the South.
The two coastlines of Salento differ enormously. Aquaduce is on the Adriatic coast. A wild and rugged area which is a National Park. Commercially undeveloped, it is a haven of tiny rocky bays and crystalline waters. A boat trip will reveal caves and grotto's and freshwater plunge pools. For a confidant swimmer, a few brief seconds underwater at a rock face, and you'll surface into a quiet, luminescent aquamarine world with a cathedral dome of stalctites. Snorkling and scuba diving conditions are perfect.
The Ionian coastline is peppered with small holiday towns and white sand beaches with flower-strewn dunes. Ideal for families with smaller children as the tourquoise waters are shallow and safe. There are both beach establishments with all facilities as well as beautiful open access beaches.
The Basso Salento has a myriad of beautiful and quiet designated 'cycle tour' paths and roads for those who like a slower pace to their sightseeing.
Marina di Novaglie area
Marina di Novaglie belongs to the larger feudal towns of Gagliano del Capo and Alessano. It is still primarily a tiny fishing village, which nestles at the centre of a tourquoise bay surrounded by a rugged shoreline. Perfect for those who seek the antidote to the Italian beach of umbrella's and sunbeds! Bag a boulder and stretch out.
The harbour has been hewn from the solid rock and offers protection to the half dozen traditional fishing boats which return each day to supply local restaurants.
Lo Scalo is an elegant restaurant, frequented by many famous visitors to Salento, including one of Pink Floyd. Their terrace overlooking the bay is virtually overhanging the bay. A three-course meal, including a good local White is around E30.00. a head . They also have waterside terraces where you can rent umbrella's and sunbeds with of course, aperitivo service, if the boulders of the bay are not for you!
At the Sirenetta, Franco and his family run a Bar, Trattoria and Pizzaria overlooking the bay. Great, fresh fish, simply cooked, homemade traditional pasta dishes, and the best pizzas from an olivewood fired oven. A three-course meal including local White is from E20.00 pp.
A tiny kiosk down on the rocks supplies cold drinks and snacks. Its so picturesque that it was used as a film location last Summer!
Then there is the Ciolo bridge and bay with the famous Restaurant and nightclub 'Gibò' perched high above. Watch the brave souls who dive from the rocks (even the bridge on occasion) into the crystal waters of this tiny inlet while enjoying Aperitivo hour on the terrace of Gibò. Or spend the night dancing in one of Italy's most beautiful clubs.
Local produce markets move from town to town each day ... and on Sunday the Lungomare at Santa Maria di Leuca becomes a shoppers paradise as stalls set up to sell a vast array of clothing, footware and leathergoods, soft furnishings, local ceramics etc. Go early to avoid the crowds and the heat!
Just 20 minutes from Aquaduce is the renowned thermal Spa town of Santa Cesaria, which provides a selection of treatments.
