The Calabria region
Calabria remains Southern Italy’s best kept secret and probably Italy’s least explored regions, and described as the 'Jewel of Italy' . It lies on the toe, reaching out to almost touch Sicily, with coastline on three sides curving round to the east to meet the Ionian Sea (Caulonia side), this is a region of beauty with a long history dating back to its role at the heart of magna Graecia (Greater Greece)
It is unspoiled and idyllic (no all day English breakfasts yet!) with miles of beaches to explore that are heavily populated in July and August but unused the rest of the year, a beach lovers paradise!
Marina di Caulonia
Caulonia Marina not only boasts a beautiful blue sea and golden sandy beaches, but stunning views of the Sila mountain range.
The unspoilt, working town of Marina di Caulonia is just a five minute walk from the apartment which has a mix of traditional and modern bars, friendly restaurants and a well stocked supermarket. There is a market every Saturday where the locals congregate to sell and buy fresh, local produce of fish, fruit and vegetables (taste the difference!), cheeses, and much more.
An easy 10 minute walk from the apartment will take you to the beach and beautiful blue Ionian Sea. During the summer months Caulonia Marina comes alive and the nearby beach and promenade open up to family friendly beach bars, music and tourist markets. There are many festivals throughout the year, particulary the famous Tarantella Dance; neighbouring towns also host festivals, including the week long jazz festival in Roccella, and big carnival in Siderno.
To make the most of your holiday it is advisable to hire a car and explore the areas valleys and mountain villages, where you will discover a culture seemingly untouched by recent centuries such as the foothills of the Aspromonte, Bivongi, Stila, Monasterace and Mammola. Just over an hours drive visit the capital city of Reggio Di Calabria, and from there hop on a ferry to spend some time in Sicily.
A 'must visit' is the old town Caulonia Superiore a 10 minute drive into the hills and wonder through the narrow cobbled streets and medieval piazzas and admire some of its numerous old churches, as well as amazing views. Here they also have a Saturday morning market.
There is a large shopping mall in Siderno which is a comfortable 15 minute drive away.
This area is famous for its historical greco roman architecture and ruins, and it was in these waters that the famous Riace Bronze warriors were found dating to the 5th century B.C. These can be viewed in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.
